Fringe skirt

I have made many skate dresses but I have a request from one client to make the skirt out of fringe (2layers). How do you go about seeing this in when piecing the bodice to the panty/skirt?

I wouldn't set it in; I'd just sew it on to a leotard. But then, I often hang skirts rather than set them in anyway. Does it stretch at all?

The fringe of course doesn't stretch.  The bodice and panty are made of Lycra.  So if I sew it to the leotard, do I have to put in a zipper or will it slide over hips?

Cool dress!  Hm, now I'm intrigued.  I wonder...  if I were going to inset the fringe, which I think I would do, now that I've seen the dress, is sew it so that the header of the fringe was past the stitching.  Then I'd cut the header off entirely and I think you'd have enough stretch between the fringes for there not to be a problem.  I would definitely give this technique a test run!  I've never actually done it!  I think you'd have to use a very small zigzag or an actual stretch stitch so that the fringes wouldn't pull through the stitching.

I made my DD a flapper dress for skating that used rows of fringe that I sewed onto the outside of the dress and then I covered the header with sequin trim.  (Thread: http://skatingforums.com/index.php?topic=3149.0)



It looked really cool when she did upright spins - the fringe stood straight out and the foiled lycra sparkled.  The fringe layers were very heavy, though.  That's why it looks so shapeless on the hanger.

I'm so excited, Clarice!  I tried your suggestion on some scrap and used my stretch stitch on my machine and it worked perfect!  The fringe is locked tight in there!  I think I will also use my serger for finishing seam on the inside for added measure.
