I know Pole Dancing has gone mainstream from its origins in exotic dancing, but I was curious as to why a lot of my searches for spins brought up pole dance videos.  Turns out, they're using figure skating spins, which is clever since we often teach students to think about spinning around an imaginary pole.  Full circle and all that.

"And that's how you do your ice skater."  Hah...

One of my friends had a pole in her room. We all played on it at her birthday party. I have to say, those things are a WORKOUT. I was SO sore the next day (I was really good at spinning around it though haha) and I had bruises where I'd held onto the pole with my legs.

It's easy to see that she's using her free leg in a circular motion to gain speed.  This remind me of coming out of the camel position where the free leg has to go in a circle around the skating leg to get into a scratch or sit spin.  Can't just drop the leg.  But, the coach looks more like a ballerina then a pole dancer.  But, I've never seen a pole dancer (except for that Demi Moore movie a friend dragged me to see :-\ )
