This movie will be in theaters for one night only, only February 17, 2011.

Quote
Commissioned by U.S. Figure Skating, the film RISE will celebrate American figure skating while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that perished in a plane crash on its way to the World Championships in Prague. Produced and directed by 16-time Emmy Award winners Lookalike Productions, RISE will document the sports' growth in popularity over the years and feature various luminaries of American figure skating. Proceeds from RISE will be used to further the mission of U.S. Figure Skating's Memorial Fund, which was established on Feb. 23, 1961, as a living legacy of those who lost their lives. The film is scheduled to premiere February 17, 2011 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

Hmmmm--lots of people want to see this! Hope we can buy/rent the DVD.

Isk8NYC

I think they'll show it like the NY Metropolitan Opera broadcasts their series in theaters.
Near me, the attendees pretend they're actually going to the Opera, dressing up, drinks and nibbles instead of coke & popcorn.

Maybe we should have some www.skatingforums.com meetups at theaters?
(I will warn everyone in advance that I'm a crybaby at things like this.  Will bring tissues.)

This is such a cute photo, I hope I can link it:

It's from the rise1961.com website - there's a photo album under the "multimedia" link.

Your idea about organizing a skatingforums party is brilliant! I know a lot of people will also go see the film with their clubs. Sadly for some of us stuck in the boondocks, where the film probably won't show, this is unlikely to happen.

USFS said they'd announce the places where the film will be played in Nov. I wonder people can actually request that it be shown in their area?

Isk8NYC

I sent an email to Regal Cinemas asking if they'd be showing it at a theatre in this area.

Their customer service department pointed me to Fathom Events, which is coordinating the showings: http://www.fathomevents.com/sports/event/usfs_rise.aspx  As I expected, Fathom Events also handles the Met's Opera series.

Tickets go on sale November 12, 2010 for the general public, buuuut....

THE USFSA SAYS THAT THEIR MEMBERS CAN BUY TICKETS FROM WWW.RISE1961.COM STARTING 11/5/2010.
(But I don't see a link on their site as yet!)

Only one upstate theater in Delaware (close to the PA border at that); none on the lower shore at all.  :'( wonder if it will be on Netflix?

I am organizing a small group to go to the showing in Revere, MA. If anyone on the boards would like to join us/meet up with us, just let me know!

We bought our tickets--$15.00 each. Hope the popcorn is free  ;)!

Anybody who's in the general Tri-Cities area in WA, please feel free to PM me if you want to meet up!

Nice piece in the NY Daily News about the 1961 team and its legacy, plus a note about the film.

They screened it at Nationals this weekend, but I didn't get to see it.  The book looks really nice.

You might want to check again.  Originally there was only one theater listed for the Twin Cities and now there are several (yay!). Perhaps your area has more listed now?  It's worth a shot.  :)

Isk8NYC

That's true: I had three options when the theater list was first updated, now I have four.

Still going to Briar Creek, though.

I suspect, although I forgot to confirm, that the movie will be released on DVD from the USFSA directly as a fundraiser for the Memorial Fund.

Someone "official" at Nationals last week said that they thought there would be a DVD of the film, but it may/may not include the presentations that are being done live during the simulcast.  Based on something I read on FSU, I'd expect it towards year-end.

I picked up a nice RISE! keychain at the USFSA table during Nationals.  I have it on my wallet clutch bag and I like it a lot!  Not bad for a freebie!

This is a really nice interview with Patricia Shelley Bushman, author of a book that was also for sale during Nationals:
http://www.lakeplacidnews.com/page/content.detail/id/503320.html

The book, titled "Indelible Tracings: The story of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team," is a collection of life stories about the victims and how figure skating rallied to save the sport.  I leafed through it and it seemed well-written, although I didn't buy a copy.  It is available by mail-order through the RISE website since it was part of the research done for the movie.

I know I'm using this topic as a catch-all for 1961 information, but that's okay.  Better to have it in one place.

TOMORROW (2/8/2011) the World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame is opening a new exhibit dedicated to the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating World team.  They were inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse last week during US Nationals.

The USFSA development office has taken a very active role in promoting the Memorial Fund, which is used to support skaters in training through gifts towards training needs and/or education.

There is a widget on the website (click on the photo) to accept cell phone donations or accept other contributions.
http://www.usfigureskating.org/content.asp?menu=donate&id=125

Part of the Rise! 1961 event and merchandise sales revenues will go towards the endowment of this fund.

Added a poll to gauge interest in skatingforums meetup at the event.  I know some skating clubs are planning to attend, so buying tickets in advance is a good idea.

I have to work.  :( BOO!

And I can't use the "sorry I can't scorekeep the hockey games, I'm going to see a figure skating movie" excuse because they'd all just laugh in my face. I hope they release it on DVD or something.

Isk8NYC

Speaking of the DVD, while there are rumors of it being released on home video, be aware that there is a completely different movie on Amazon available for sale.  It has nothing to do with figure skating's Rise movie.

Also, the USFSA asked for volunteers to hand out survey cards after the event. Check with your figure skating club if you have time.

Lots of press and media coverage this week in anticipation of this Thursday's "RISE" event.
Time to make meetup arrangements!  http://skatingforums.com/index.php/topic,432.0.html

Regarding the poll at the top of this thread: are there really only six people going to see this event out of the hundreds of members on the board?

From what I understand, there's a PRE-SHOW so plan to get to the theater early.

Followup story from Colorado Springs Examiner on the Hall of Fame exhibit: http://www.examiner.com/sports-in-colorado-springs/1961-world-team-exhibit-opens-at-figure-skating-museum

Quote
Thursday night's exhibit ceremony was the first of four things U.S. Figure Skating is doing in commemoration.

Next Tuesday morning there will be a wreath ceremony at 9:30 at the skate bench on the Broadmoor grounds.  The bench has the names of the eight Broadmoor members killed.

Next Thursday will be the nationwide showing of the film RISE, which will honor the victims and tell the story of the rebirth of American figure skating in its wake.  The film starts at 6:00 pm (MT), and will be shown at both Cinemark locations and the Hollywood Theatres in Colorado Springs.  To reserve tickets, call the theatres or go online to www.rise1961.com.

Then next Saturday there will be a Colorado Springs reception and fund-raiser for the Memorial Fund.  For information on that, contact U.S. Figure Skating at 719-635-5200.
