Is it the norm to notify the school when you kid passes a usfs test or medals in a competition?  I am talking no test level.  A parent said I would want to have that stuff on her permanent record.

At no test?  No.  A high school junior/senior who tested or medalled in Novice or above...yes.

Would schools really record that on the student's "permanent record?"

I always thought the "permanent record" thing was a myth...

That said- even small achievements some schools like to know about- it totally depends on the culture of your school.  One district I worked in did announcements of kids achievements over the speakers, new karate belts, gymnastics results, if there were skaters their test and competition results would fit right in.  They also put them in the PTO newsletter.

No, schools really do keep permanent records of their students.  I know they record absence reasons, incidents, and school awards/scholarships in addition to grades, etc., but I don't know if external achievements would be recorded if it didn't involve some high honor.  For example, skaters who receive the ISI collegiate scholarship would have that noted, and their ISI FS 10 test completion, but not "Daisy took first place in No Test during a local competition."  I agree with Skittl - that's more a teacher/PTO announcement.  Facebook has sort of become the more relevant way to cheer for your kids.

The only records schools keep "forever" are final reportcards/transcripts and immunization records.

The only time I let the principal know of an outside activity award was when she entered a writing contest and was in the paper with her school name.

She occasionally does bring in a medal won that week and her friends cheer with testing because our tests are in the morning and she comes in late.

I think I would be more apt to let her school know if it was a qualifying comp.  But you might have a very different school where karate awards, swim team, dance contests, musician contests, art contests, scout badges etc are announced every day.

For skating records being permanent, USFS keeps them.  :D

I've never heard anything about your skating results going on your "permanent record." Here in Virginia, when schools talk about "permanent records," it refers to your grades, any disciplinary action and extracurriculars that happen within the school system. But parents do report the results of skating tests and comps, and the schools share it on the morning announcements, newsletter or whatever "brag list" they have.

But skating is not huge here. If you can do a lap at a public session without falling, you're better than most people. Passing any test or placing in a competition would be impressive to most of the other kids and the teachers.

Anything placed in a record at a public school is protected by FERPA, (in the US) so no, they would not put skating results in a school record. If they did, no one would be allowed to talk about it!

I'm not sure why the school would need to be notified about any skating achievements, as it has nothing to do with the school, and would just serve as a distraction from learning, IMO. If there is a request made for outside news by a parent group or newspaper, that is different. Our HS paper named my daughter athlete of the week when she went to Synchro nationals, and frequent emails are sent by the school-town newspaper liaison asking for info.

I think the parent who told the OP about the 'permanent record' is ill informed. Here's a nice legal summary.
Grades, absences, illness, medication, disciplinary actions, teacher evaluations are on there. There is a section for awards and honors, but these are school related.

Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

I just filled out a test application for a club that asks for the school name of the skater (as well as Principal name and address) in a section called "Recognition of Test Achievement".  I assume this means the club lets the school know if a skater passes, for informal recognition.

Maybe, maybe not.  Clubs with competitors or synchro teams that travel and miss school days often provide excused absence notes addressed to the school.

ETA: Wait, I just re-read your post.  This was on the TEST application; I thought it was a membership app.  Maybe they do notify the school about test results.  What did you fill in?

OT:
Where I grew up, we had a daily local paper with wide circulation.  The sports section would publish results like this; they had deadlines and you could call in the results of competitions and tests.  I used to call in the results of swimming and skating competitions.  Later, they accepted fax and now, email, so it's much easier to get names spelled correctly, lol.

Everyone loved seeing their names in print.  The only problem was when someone got left out.  We used to report swim meet results - they only wanted the names of swimmers who took first in two or more events.  You can't believe the tantrums and tears from swimmers (and parents!!!) if there was a last-minute switch in a relay and someone was overlooked.  *chuckles*

Not that I am aware of. As the test chair of our club, I have never heard of that. Even if the student passes a high level test, I do not see why the school should need to be told. I also can't see a school putting that in her school records. It has nothing to do with the school. As far as her future and applications for colleges and so forth, I would think there would be a place to list accomplishments on those. Even then, I would not list them all. JMO, of coarse!

USFSA keeps records of tests passed and competition placements at the higher levels... for qualifying competitions at the Juv level and above.

Hmmm, I don't think that is on our applications. I haven't ever included dd's school on her test apps. Nor have I, as the test chair, ever had to let a school know about a child passing a test. Interesting!

I've tested at three other clubs and never seen it before.  It stood out because of this thread.

As an adult, I wrote "not applicable"

I was the test chair at our club for 4+ years.  The test chair can request that USFS send a letter of recognition to the skater's school.  It has to be requested at the time the tests are entered so I can see them wanting the info on the application.  I never did though. The only time I might have if it was a senior moves/free skate test.  The one that took hers during my test chair tenure had already graduated and was a freshman in college when she passed those tests.

There is a graduating high school senior program that just started up again in 2011.  My DD graduates in June and applied for it.  She will be receiving the Silver Award.  Requirements are here:  https://www.usfigureskating.org/Programs.asp?id=494  I think it was nice, because she could include it on college applications and be recognized at her awards banquet at school for her skating.

I wish this had been around in 2009 - my older daughter would have qualified for the platinum, having competed at the national level in synchro. That would have given us more clout when we tried to equate her skating to a varsity letter at her high school.
