Agnes says it's time to start a new topic for upcoming camps, clinics, workshops and seminars.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen too many advertisements and emails yet - it's still a little early in the year.

I will ping the web more extensively tomorrow and see what opportunities I can scrounge up, but if anyone else has the 411 on opportunities for skaters, post them here!  No rewards other than our appreciation for sharing the wealth.

Thank you for posting the links to your marvelous blog!!! I really appreciated your insights. I always thought the Lake Placid camp sounded fun and presented a wonderful opportunity to meet more adult skaters. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a tough sell in terms of value for money.

Outside of transport to get there, and housing, the camp is quite reasonable. $275 last year for 12 hours of ice time a day, and $13 for every group lesson. I met people who just went for the ice time and never took a lesson. In my mind, if you're going to take a vacation, it's quite reasonable.

You can also attend the camp for three days, two days or just one day.   You can keep costs down by eating breakfast in your room, bringing a bag lunch to the rink, and eating dinner at home.   There are reasonably priced restaurants in town - $10 - $15 per entree.

Question:

How good does a skater need to be to go to a camp?  I am hoping to go to one (probably Lake Placid) in 2013 (just not practical/feasible to go this summer). Is there a certain level that a skater must have passed or a list of moved that must be mastered? I have not seen this info on any of the websites, perhaps there is an understood standard that I am not aware of?

Lake Placid has all levels.   The only thing I'd say is that these clinics can be pretty long days- you should be good enough that you think you'll get something out of it.

I went to Motown Tango (Detroit's clinic) and I think I was the only one not doing flip or lutz yet.  But everyone was very accommodating to make sure I got the best experience I could.

Bobbe Shire Spin Clinic
Garner (NC) Polar Ice House

Last year's brochure said that adults are grouped with similar-level skaters, so they're not treated as a one-size-fits-all group.  (I like that!)

Adult Summer Camp in Northern New Jersey (Floyd Hall Arena in Little Falls, NJ):

Floyd Hall is going to have an adult Summer "camp" again this year, scheduled for Wednesday evenings at 6-8:30 June 27th through August 8th, and will include:

6:00pm-6:30pm   On-Ice Practice
6:30pm–7:30pm  On-Ice Clinic
7:45pm–8:30pm  Off-Ice Conditioning

Geared towards adult skaters who have progressed beyond basic skills and are at least on low-level freestyle, pairs, dance, moves tests & up.

This camp is always a lot of fun!  I used to come from VA to NJ last year for it :)

We will have the use of full ice sheet for the on-ice class.  What is the class like?  I would describe it as a combination of artistic body movement & edge-work.  Your balance on the blade/blade usage will get challenged and will improve through exercises Igor gives that use a lot of upper body/arms movements - stretch all the way up, crouch down, all the while your feet go through combinations of edges/crossovers/two-footed twizzles and yes, even swizzles (taken beyond your LTS swizzles!).  No stiffness of MITF work here!  As someone who tends to be very technical in my skating and does not easily "let go", I find pure delight in Igor's on-ice class - it makes me discover the freedom and artistry in skating.

Off-ice class kicks the tush.  Sometimes we end up having a ballet class, but most often it is a conditioning class with a lot of emphasis on core strength and a good dose of stretching.  We frequently end up in a fit of laughter when all of us (at times including Igor) fall out of yet another pilates/yoga-type exercise when the under-conditioned muscles give up :D

Of course, one of the most fun things about this camp is that it is specifically for adults (mature teens who do not think adults have 3-heads are welcome, too).

Application here

As a participant from the first year it was offered, I will gladly answer questions about the camp.

Robert Crown Center in Evanston, IL is hosting its annual adult clinic on Saturday, 8/18 from 8am to noon for just $44. Four excellent excellent adult-friendly coaches that I love the most from the facility, such a pity I cannot make it this year due to testing.
