I think this is a great idea: a site where you can review sewing patterns!

This is for a Jolie skating dress pattern: http://sewing.patternreview.com/patterns/15466

I hadn't seen this site mentioned before - specialtysportswear.com sells "system" patterns for skating dresses where you can mix-and-match features.

The Jalie patterns are excellent, but almost everyone who I know who has sewn them (myself included- I've done 3 patterns) has needed to widen the panty a bit- so keep that in mind.

I order mine from either patternreview.com (linked above, they carry more than just the one) or fabric.com.

It is expensive to have them shipped from Canada, even with the buy 3 get 1 deal.

For Jalie, I buy them from sewingpatterns.com, and only when they are having a sale on independent patterns.  I also prefer to buy Kwik Sew from that site under the same conditions, but if I need something right away, I will buy them at Hancock Fabrics.

I actually e-mailed Jalie about the panty problem and they said their very early patterns had granny panties, then the revised them too far in the other direction, and apparently their new patterns are supposed to be better, but I have not tried them.  It's probably best to just compare it to a pattern that you know fits so you know where you need to adust.

Jalie changed their basic block sometime in 2009 I think.  I can check for sure about the 28 series, but at least patterns starting with number 29xx are the newer shape.

It's not actually very difficult to modify the leg opening from a pattern that is cut lower than preferred... probably one of the simplest changes you can make, since you can try them on and figure out what to get rid of before you cut it off.. it doesn't need to be done when you cut out the pattern :)

This is a bit commercial, but Denver Fabrics has figure skating patterns grouped together on this page:

They're 20% off right now if you order online.

I use a Kwik Sew pattern and I've never had a problem with sizing. I even used a dress pattern to make a skirt - just chopped off the torso pieces at the waist!

I did that with the Jalie pattern I made. It was way too short waisted for me (which is weird, because I've never had that problem with a dress pattern before), so I just chopped it of above the waist and voila - skating skirt. Which I never wear.  :D

Mine sees summer use only, because the rink is quite warm.

I also made the dress for a second time last November in two colours, which is a bother because you have to guesstimate the material requirements. Navy blue and white, and the effect was quite striking. What wasn't great was having to do the whole thing by hand...
