Rave:  The ice today was the best quality I have found since I moved to Australia.

Rant:  After 45 minutes, nearly all the figure skaters have slowed to a stop.  And they've stopped in the middle of the ice.

Rant:  Ice dancers must stay 1.5 meters apart, but the whole synchro team can skate in a hold.

Rant:  My skating on the first session was terrible.

Rave:  But I have never improved that much in one hour before.

Local rinks closed again a few days ago.

My rink is open again: Yay!

There are public sessions again: yay!
(My rink had 6 hour long ones prior to lockdown so we'd all use that since freestyle was very very limited)

All the hockey players hang out in the lobby after their games and don't wear masks: Boo.

While I've posted this graphic in the past, it's especially appropriate now considering your observation...

A bit cruel, but I can't help but wonder about those not concerned about their own survival.

Hmmm, that one on the left does look more like a hockey player.
Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

Rave: we have ice and freestyle sessions
Mega Rave: no hockey   ;D
Major Thanks: to the volunteers who are doing the cleaning, temperature checks, etc

It looks as if my local university rink has had ice for a while, but are not open for anything but two university club sports - hockey, and synchro. There is no drop in hockey, no local high school or youth hockey, no figure skating, no LTS. The web site still indicates complete closure despite this activity, but that doesn't surprise me.

I heard about it from one of the synchro team members who wanted to get her blades sharpened. Out of caution, I declined given the circumstances and the high rates of transmission among the college students.

That doesn't surprise me.  Even during lockdown in my area, skaters told me of one rink operating "under the radar"; that's a term I'm hearing again now that indoor sports have been "paused" due to resurgent rate of infection.  Love this lingo.

Query

Rant: I can't just head out to a session when I feel like it. My favorite rink wants people to reserve a spot a day in advance. So they don't get too many skaters.

What a nuisance!

I know they probably won't get too many people at certain times - I should just be able to go.
