In looking at social media from the ISI-MIAMA Conference, the ISI is rebranding -- their new name was announced as "Ice Sports Industry."

I had thought the ISI conceded all learn-to-skate rights to LTS USA as well, but maybe they've decided to compete instead?

Well, ISI is a rink organization--that's where it makes its money from. My rink teaches LTSUSA, but it's an ISI rink. I predict ISI will fold.
I don't know why it refused to join LTS USA, but maybe it is ceding the skating side to USFSA. I wish it would do something for the skaters.

I remember a year or so ago there were rumors of a merger of the two LTS programs, but it didn't pan out.

This certainly suggests they're not planning to give up LTS programs:

There were financial issues, from what the PSA indicated.  That's why they didn't merge.

The ISI wasn't at the PSA Conference. I really want a new Flip pin - I lost mine last year.

I don't think they're giving up LTS without a fight and it seems like someone has taken charge of marketing because there have been a lot of timely posts on social media.

I cannot figure out why an well established organization with a well established name would change it... Usually a big mistake.

Unless they think they can take over curling - a very small world, not worth much money to ISI, with other well established organizations already in place.

"Ice Sport Industry" is a name already used on a website by another organization: http://www.eisfa.eu - the ISU, a big name in figure skating, to put it mildly, seems to be associated with it.

You overstate the case:
"EISFA offers four membership categories for the ice sport industry:" The words "ice sport industry" is not used as a name, it's an expanded phrase.

True - but I think you shouldn't be able to trademark a phrase that is already in common use.

And I still don't get the purpose of renaming it. What was wrong with "Ice Skating Institute"?

(For that matter, what was wrong with USFSA, that it had to be shortened to USFS - And only for SOME purposes, which makes it more confusing?)

If General Motors suddenly renamed itself Generic Mobility, it wouldn't be good for business. The same applies to ISI.

I'm not a fan at all of the new logo they revealed. Nothing about it screams ice and frankly it looks like student work. I asked them what the reasoning was behind their choices (they used copperplate...ugh) and they gave me some real half a**ed response saying it's "fun and bright". There's nothing fun or bright about it.
