It was a late night public, even here we have off duty cops in uniforms to keep the violence down (in both the rink and the theaters.)

So the shooter just left the park with his skates on?

So sad for the teen -- they say he might not be able to walk again. :(

Wow!  What unreal news.  Wish I was in New York so I could have a chance serving on that jury.

In the articles I read, the shooter was on the outside of the rink

The NYTimes article says the the shooter tried to shake down the skater for his jacket off-ice before the session, then the shooter walked up to the rink and called the skater to the side of the rink, where he shot him in cold blood.

Monumental stupidity - one kid fighting for his life and the other facing serious felony charges - all over a friggin' jacket.

But of course gun control is eeeeeeevil and bad and evil and shouldn't happen.  >:(
"Three months in figure skating is nothing. Three months is like 5 minutes in a day. 5 minutes in 24 hours - that's how long you've been working on this. And that's not long at all. You are 1000% better than you were 5 minutes ago." -- My coach

I'm a pacifist here, but I think the gun control lobby misses the reality of gun crime. The percentage of gun-related crimes using registered and legal firearms is incredibly small. Most druggies and nutjobs looking for an item to steal and pawn for their next hit are likely not your middle class dad going to the shooting range on Sunday afternoon.
I think the greater issue here is the sick society with its skewed morals and priorities. It could just as easily have been a stabbing. When someone begins to value things over and above people one can only wonder what else is mixed up in their mind. It can be coats, shoes, hats, ad nauseum. What sort of arrested development are we dealing with? Teen boys with their baggy clothes, hats on sideways...absolutely ridiculous and childish.

sigh... :(

Note: I'm in canada where nobody can legally carry a sidearm or long gun. All guns of any type must be registered, and owners/purchasers must hold a valid permit with photo id, guns must be stored and transported in a locked case, with trigger locks, and ammunition stored separately in a locked container. The people who shoot others at nightclubs on downtown Toronto at 2 am do none of the above, and they get their guns and ammo through the black market. Gun control just makes the black market more lucrative for all parties and leads to an increase in violent crimes involving guns. It is like drugs, same thing. Announce a war on drugs and the black market booms. its a profitable racket.
