I saw some at Rainbo today without the crystal and I thought, "wow, those are ugly."

I just saw these.  Phantom Revolution with crystal option.

And I thought the colored blades might be distracting. These would really be distracting!!!

Isn't there a 'black gold seal' with the ugliy glitter replaced with a dead black?
Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

They come in all chrome as well.

I saw these at a skate shop last weekend.  My daughter (age 8, in Basic Skills 4) thought they looked AWESOME.  (I remember loving anything glittery at that age, myself.)

Yup.  All of the Revolution blades in this line have the option of the black uppers. They actually look wicked good on a pair of black skates.  The silver uppers also look quite nice - they are becoming increasingly popular in our area.

I'm looking to upgrade my current blade (the jackson equivalent to the gold seal) to the revolution gold seal. Mostly because they look snazzy and I am not really competing much and plan to really only do shows and competitions if they're local.

The glitter would be too much for me... too distracting. I would be too worried about the stones falling off onto the ice, though I'm sure they're stuck on there really well.

I like how the black looks but I think the silver will be less distracting.

The skaters that have switched to them that I know all are big fans. They are lighter, and apparently landings feel "softer" on the ice.

Query

Davincisoprano1, aren't the Jackson Ultima Matrix II series (and the somewhat similar Paramount blades) lighter still than Revolution blades? Especially the Ultima "Ultralight" model.

Someone told me that MK and Wilson have the shiniest finish and the fanciest engraving, so if snazzy appearance is what you want most, maybe it's worth a few hundred extra dollars and the altered blade profile.

I am curious about that "lighter" landing. If true, the Revolution blades might be less rigid... Side effects?

I could see that look being very appealing to male skaters--like the pink blades to girls of a certain age.

I think white blades would be nice too .

I've heard this as well and most people suspect that it's because the carbon fiber frame is able to flex with the boot - the metal part of blade itself is just as strong and rigid, the only difference is the interface between the metal portion of the blade and the boot - it's no longer as rigid as it would be with an all metal blade, but carbon fiber is plenty strong so I wouldn't worry about it failing.

Personally, as someone on their second pair of very brightly colored blades, I think the rhinestones are a bit much myself - but they may appeal to certain people and there's nothing wrong with that.  I think the Edea Ice Fly with the silver revolutions looks really nice - mostly because the blades match the different heel color of those boots, but it's not a combo I'd have assumed I would like before I saw it in person

Agnes - there's a skater at my rink with white paramounts :)

Sk8tmum

Yes, it is the flex and the ability to absorb impact that makes the landings "softer".  Interestingly, they don't go up to the full size range of the traditional Gold Seals ... Seals go up to a larger size than some other skate blades primarily for male skaters, who often use a larger skate size, and can snap blades with the force of impact, making the solid sole plate of the Seal helpful for blade longevity ... I am assuming that the carbon fibre supports cannot withstand the force as well as as stainless (or could just be practical, with too small a market, don't know).

Anyways, there seems to be less resistance to the Revolution blades than there is to the colored blades, perhaps because there is a useful rather than merely aesthetic reason for them?

The colored blades started out as a useful reason- the materials used in the colored part of the blade provide for a lighter skate.  Additionally, I believe they were the first blades to use the harder steel that holds the edges much longer.  It is merely happenstance that the colored part of the blade can be colored- since it is not solid metal- which gave them a marketing tool.  But I believe Paramount set out to make a lighter blade, not a pretty one.  (And Ultima likely followed with 'pretty' for market share, but it too is a much lighter blade, with harder steel.  Interestingly, the low level paramounts don't use the harder steal).

Can't say there is much -useful- about the rhinestones, so I think they fit into the useful and aesthetic category just the same.

Didn't paramount initially offer rhinestones on some of their blades as well?  They don't now, but I do remember that when they were relatively new to the market.

Sk8tmum

I put those rhinestone blades into the same category of the rhinestone covered skates that Klingbeil used to use in their ads:  a gimmick, and not something that I'd ever expect to see ... except maybe for a show skater with a lot of money to spare!  So, me, I really don't consider those as useful, as I'd be worried about the stones falling off, etc etc etc ...  ;D and I don't think they're that pretty either ...

Besides, give me 1/2 an hour, a box of rhinestones, and glue ... and I'll make a pair at home ...

Sorry for the late reply.

I'm looking into new blades not for the lightness but for the quality. My Jackson ultimate legacy błades aren't holding a sharpening anymore and are dull within two skates. I've had them resistor need with the same results. On my old skates I had Wilson majestic and they held sharpening a forever. I want to go back to better quality.

I am trying to find some reviews though because I want to be completely sure that I want them over just hold seal.

I found with my Mk pros (by wilson) they held a perfect edge--until they didn't. One session great edge, next session rental skate edge. They lasted about 50 hours, so no problem, I just learned I have to track my time in my logbook.

Reviews here are universally positive. However: your blades.  This may sound really stupid ... but ... do you wear hard guards a lot, and if so, are they old? We found that the "culprit" to losing the edge was that my kid was, finally, wearing guards all of the time ... and we didn't notice there was grit in the grooves of the guard that was destroying the edge fast.

I only wear my hard guards to and from the benches to the ice. They're new as of July. I may clean them and see if it helps for the time being.

Sk8tmum

Run the guards thru the dishwasher if you have one ... it does a nice job on cleaning them !

A guy I know has the black paramounts(?) anyway with his black boots they looked very nice.

FYI I just read these need a special jig for sharpening. I'm trying to contact John Wilson to find out what it is. :-/
