It is pretty much impossible to fall on your shins while skating, because your boots and knees are in the way.  But while pair skating, you can get kicked in the shins with a blade (hello, pair arabesques!).  Anyone have tips for shin protection?  I am looking for something that can go under pants and does not require very long socks.

soccer or lacrosse shin guards?

Ooooo, yeah, I have a nice scar on my shin from a pair spin attempt.  Chain mail would be good, but the velcro soccer guards would be better and you can take them off easily when you're not skating with a partner.  Don't get the kind with the attached partial sock - it's too thick to fit over/under the skates.

I beg to disagree ;)  Messy landings or just standing idly could both lead to ripped pants or multiple stitches on the shin.

How much area do you need to cover?

I was posting because I thought these required really long, thick socks, which would not work with skates.  Also probably they would not go under pants easily.

Maybe I should buy a yard of Kevlar, cut it, and add Velcro.

There are ones that don't have the "sock" part attached.  If you look in the sporting goods section, you'll see these "guards" that wrap around the shins without anchoring at the foot that are held on with d-hooks and velcro; I would think that they would work well.  I've seen some that are 3-panels that bend at the joins ... I know UnderArmour makes them.

Or, you could cut the sock part at the bottom and fasten them under the skates with velcro? Would also protect the boots on your skates, which can take quite a battering if you're working on pairs moves.

Me, I would havea the guards on the OUTSIDE of your pants.  Having your partner's skate blade catch in your pants can lead to nasty falls, as well as ruining a decent pair of skating pants (unless you're skating in snug fitting running-type leggings).

I was thinking the same thing :) I had permanent bruises up and down my right shin when I was re-learning the loop and flip lol :)
