Groupon deal for the Blazers Ice Centre in Ohlahoma City, OK:  Ice-Skating Outing for Four or Eight-Week Learn-to-Skate Program

http://www.groupon.com/deals/blazers-ice-centre-okc?c=dnb&p=3

Quote
Ice is nothing more than water that won't let people swim in it, and must be publically chastised in the form of sharp metallic blades that merrily crisscross to and fro across the frozen surface. Mete out aqueous justice with today’s Groupon to Blazers Ice Centre.

Choose between the following options:

•For $32, you get a skating package for four (a $64 value). The package includes: •One session admission for four adults or children
•Four skate rentals
•Four baskets of chicken fingers, including fries and a drink

•For $50, you get an eight-week learn-to-skate program (a $132 value including $12 membership fee).
Eight-week classes are held on the following dates and times:
 •October 25–December 13: Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m.
 •October 30–December 17: Saturdays at 11:30 a.m.

Blazers Ice Centre, home of the Oklahoma University Sooners, lets groups embark on frosty fun adventures during daily public-skate hours. Twirling and toe-picking across a frozen indoor pond marries exercise with entertainment and gives budding Dorothy Hamills and Wayne Gretzkys a chance to practice camel spins, fast breaks, and basic stopping technique, such as running into a wall. Fueled by a meal of chicken fingers, fries, and a drink, a foursome of ice gliders can enjoy freestyle skating to their heart's content.

Registered instructors mold slip 'n' sliders of all ages into graceful ice traversers in the fundamentals of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program. Pupils wearing either their own skates or a pair of rentals (included with this Groupon) ease onto the rink, as skate mavens impart the basics of icemanship, such as distinguishing between a triple lutz, a double salchow, or a single angry zamboni.

After the invigorating lessons, class members gambol about during public skating, where the Sooners’ palpable aura acts as an inspirational beacon to aspiring skaters.

Groupon deal: http://www.groupon.com/deals/miami-kendall-ice-arena?c=dnb&p=4

Kendall Ice Arena – Miami, Florida
Ice-Skating Outing for Two or Figure-Skating Classes

Quote
Like the best-tasting pieces of Halloween candy, shoes are better when they have blades attached to them. Strap on sharp slippers with today's Groupon to Kendall Ice Arena. Choose between the following options:
•For $10, you get open-skate admission and skate rentals for two people (a $20 value).
•For $40, you get six group figure-skating classes, plus entry to public skate sessions with each class, and a one-year U.S. Figuring Skating basic-skills registration for one (a $95.50 value).

Kendall Ice Arena appeals frost-seeking athletes with daily open-skate sessions and an array of figure-skating lessons. During open skate, two ice carvers of any ages, skill level, and blade sharpness can take advantage of the 200'x58' sheet. Those dropping in on karaoke night, held Thursdays from 6:30–10 p.m., can glide and twirl or belt out renditions of "I Wanna Skate With Somebody."

Those opting for the six classes will learn from a professional teacher in the U.S. Figure Skating basic-skills curriculum. The eight-level program gradually introduces fledgling fancy-feet to the fundamental moves. Each 30-minute session boasts dynamic ice instruction as novices glide through essential techniques, including moving backward, stopping, turning, and carving cursive love poems into freshly zambonied ice. Enrollment in the program includes the USFS registration fee, which is good for one year. Skaters can suit up in their own skates or rent blades for $3 a day during their lessons, and take advantage of open skate afterward.

Saw this on the Raleigh craigslist site - sounds like they bought a groupon deal or similar and are re-selling it now.

Buyer beware!

Groupon deal for West Hartford, CT

http://www.groupon.com/deals/veterans-memorial-ice-rink-1

Quote
Like the best-tasting pieces of Halloween candy, shoes are better when they have blades attached to them. Engage in serrated skating with today's Groupon: for $7, you get public skating admission for two at Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink (up to a $13.50 value).

Pairs of blade runners head to Veterans Memorial Ice Skating Rink to pirouette and glide through 60- to 90-minute open-skate sessions held in a climate-controlled environment. The 200'x85' rink is regulation NHL size, allowing skaters to recreate the quadruple axel Wayne Gretzky used to do as he crossed the endzone. An electric-powered zamboni handles all smoothing-related concerns, ensuring the air is free of emissions. Visitors must bring their own skates or acquire a pair of Riedell soft skates from the rental shop for $4. Stop by the arcade to sharpen hand-eye coordination, or visit the snack bar and skate shop for a snow cone served inside a hockey mask. Check the schedule for open-skate days and times.

I'm adding the "serrated skating" to the list of post count titles, lol.

My cousin used to write for Groupon - they have a staff of writers that research the deals and write up the text. They're expected to be really silly and maybe have a bit of an inside joke feel, if possible. She liked writing for them, but was mostly doing it while between "real" jobs.

If you belong to a social networking site, like Facebook or Twitter, you should "like" or "follow" your local rinks.

Several of them have offered two-for-one skating sessions and free introduction lessons.

Groupon deal for Arkansas Skatium, Little Rock, Arkansas http://www.groupon.com/deals/arkansas-skatium-little-rock?c=dnb&p=3

Quote
Before the invention of skates, individuals hoping to enjoy open-air cruising were required to either surf on top of their cars or walk really fast. Feel the wind in your hair and your feet with today’s Groupon to Arkansas Skatium. Choose from the following options:

•For $20, you get a family fun pack (a $43 value) that includes:
•Admission for four to any open public ice- or roller-skating session
•Skate rental for four
•One large 16” pizza with one topping
•One pitcher of soda

•For $30, you get five ice-skating classes (a $126.50 total value) which include:
•Skate rental (a $15 total value)
•Season skate pass (a $49 value)
•Five classes (a $62.50 total value)
•$20 off the purchase of new skates (not included in the total value)

•For $59, you get ten ice-skating classes (a $204 total value), which include:
•Skate rental (a $30 total value)

•10 classes (a $125 value)
•$20 off the purchase of new skates (not included in the total value)

Arkansas Skatium offers graceful gliders their choice of eight-wheeled or double-bladed fun on the facility’s radiant rinks. Roller skates gather speed as skaters skim across the slick surface, reliving youthful fantasies of becoming a roller-derby star or 1950s drive-in waitress. Coast among the crowds as the upbeat melodies of disco classics and retro rock put a little pep in each push. Switching climates, fun-loving freewheelers can spin and twirl over to the ice rink to practice double toe loops, triple axels, or quadruple stackers before chowing down on slices of piping-hot pizza blanketed in a choice of pepperoni, sausage, or plain cheese.

Skaters ages 4 and older seeking to sharpen their frozen-surface skills may opt instead to enroll in a series of ice-skating lessons. In addition to 30-minutes of personalized instruction, participants garner an hour of practice time on the ice and three months of open skating by blade, wheel, or greased tennis shoe. Although skate rentals are included, students receive a complimentary $20 credit towards the purchase of their very own set of sharp shoes from Arkansas Skatium's pro shop.

The Winter Olympics are like the Summer Games' less-cool little brother. You'll feel like a million gold medals as you're gliding around the rink at The Ice Factory of Central Florida, where today's deal will get you admission, rented skates, and a small popcorn and drink for only $7 (a $14 value). Or, for just $13, make this a pairs deal and get two admissions, rentals, and sets of snacks (a $28 value). groupon deal for Raleigh Center Ice (formerly Raleigh RecZone) in Raleigh, NC
http://www.groupon.com/deals/raleigh-center-ice

•For $10, you get ice-skating passes for two (a $20 value).
•For $18, you get ice-skating passes for four (a $40 value).

Not sure I care for the tone of the "creative writing" on this one, which includes this blurb:

Quote
Atop Raleigh Center Ice’s freshly zambonied rink, skaters zip and twirl through nearly daily public-skating sessions. After lacing up the provided rental skates or strapping ice cubes to sneakers, guests can glide over the frost-encrusted Carolina Hurricanes’ logo, jettisoning down the length of the NHL–level rink. Ice jockeys of all levels can fly across the ice in tandem or barrel toward figure skaters in synchronized quartets almost any day of the week, practicing snowplow stops or full-chested hockey slams. The recently remodeled rink aims to accommodate the youth hockey groups and freelance skaters of the community, and boasts a lofty new lobby complete with plans for a pro shop and sports grill.
"barrel toward figure skaters" and "full-chested hockey slams?"

I'm tempted to write a note to the rink manager.

This groupon is less nasty: http://www.groupon.com/deals/portland-ice-arena

Portland Ice Arena, Portland, Maine

For $3, you get one open-skate admission and ice-skate rental (up to a $7 value).

For $15, you get a family skating outing good for admission and skate rental for up to seven people (up to a $49 value).

For $50, you get one party package (up to a $150 value). Each package includes:
•Admission for up to 20 skaters
•Up to 20 skate rentals
•Party locker room rental

Since 1985, skaters of all skill levels have glided across Portland Ice Arena, from first-time rink trekkers to practicing Portland Pirates. Public-skating season runs from mid-June to April with open-skate times available throughout the week, and the rink may be reserved for special events such as birthday parties, adult and youth hockey groups, company events, and penguin family reunions. Uninspired blades regain their edge after a trip to the arena's sharpening station, and the Cheap Skate Cafe fills empty stomachs and allows skaters to hydrate without the risk of adhering their tongues to high-traffic surfaces.

groupon deal for C3 Ice Academy at CU Recreation Center, Boulder, CO

Some icy sports have land-based counterparts; ice hockey has field hockey, curling has bowling, and figure skating has competitive dances held atop oil slicks. Keep your shoes clean and bladed with today's Groupon for a six-week ice-skating-class package from C3 Ice Academy, held at the CU-Boulder Ice Arena (up to a $175 total value including tax), which includes:
•Six on-ice group skating lessons, held once a week for six weeks (a $95 value). This Groupon is valid for the following classes: •Snowplow
•Basic levels 1–8
•Adult levels 1–4

•Six off-ice group conditioning lessons, held once a week for six weeks (a $50 value)
•Six skate rentals for on-ice lessons (a $16 value)

C3 Ice Academy fosters both recreational and career-seeking ice skaters with instruction on and off the ice. After lacing puppies in provided skates, students can take to the frozen floor in Monday and Saturday classes tailored to beginners and beyond, ages 3 and up. Snowplow sessions introduce neophytes to footwork such as forward and backward skating, stopping, and thoroughly tickling the rink's outermost edges, and basic 1–4 folds in crossover steps. As skaters progress, they can perfect the one-legged spin and waltzing through level 8. Freestyle caps the chilly curriculum, as students say goodbye to ice-bound moves to master the single jump and the perpetual motion of the elusive helicopter.

On-ice study at C3 Ice Academy coalesces with off-ice conditioning to build all-around athletes. Once a week, skaters will pique muscles on dry land with moves that help build flexibility, technique, and strength, which better both on-ice performance and the ability to gracefully lift a station wagon.

I'm tempted to write a note to the rink manager.

I'd write to Groupon, since it's their staff that writes the blurbs... if my cousin was still working there, I'd mention it to her directly.
