An alternative to resolutions.  Read the short blog post to get the details of this concept, but basically the idea is that you come up with three words to use to remind you of your priorities for the year.  The blog is more business/career focused, but I think it could be applied to skating (or anything else, really).

I came across this blog a while ago and have been occasionally trying to implement this idea, with limited success.  (Mostly because I never remember to think about my three words...)  This year I've decided to try to come up with three words to help me focus my skating. There are so many details and things to try to remember to do while skating, so I tried to boil it down to the critical things that will help me while I'm on the ice.  So... here are my words for 2018.  We'll see how this works.

Lift (my head (!), core, free leg)
Bend (my knees and ankles- this will also remind me to build strength and flexibility off ice)
Shift (my weight)

(might replace that last one with Smile- positive attitude!)

So what are your three words for 2018?

Meli

Heal: Need to take the downtime to recover appropriately from a recent procedure
Strengthen: Keeping strong during recovery and upping my game afterwards
Patience: With recovery, with strengthening, and with pesky edges in and out of three turns

I'm probably not strictly following the rules with this, but I've always been a rebel.  ::>)

I was talking to my coach the other night about this - it is something I struggle with, and I am working on it this year in my art & my writing as well as my skating. And it happens to be a phrase that is three words long:

Respect. The. Process.

I missed this thread - good topic!

My resolutions are get more sleep and skate more often, which are three words each!

More on topic:
Track (Practice lists after every lesson)
Focus (Stick to season plan, with minimal adjustments)
Strive (Push harder to achieve goals faster)

So far, emailing the practice lists after each lesson is going well.  My skaters had been slacking off in using their notebooks.  One would waste 20 minutes, allegedly writing down her practice items.  (Really: she was doodling in the notebook.)  One lost hers months ago and hasn't been able to find it, but I think she deliberately ditched it so she wouldn't have to practice.  Now, I email a list to the parent.  Parents print it out and bring it to the rink.  It's taken away the "I don't know what to practice" excuses and eliminated interrupting others' lessons.

"If you still look good after skating practice, you didn't work hard enough."

Faster; hgher; stronger. The Olympic motto, and what my jumps and spins need to be!

1.  Left shoulder
2.  Left shoulder
3.  Left shoulder!

Late to the party, but I love this!

1. Consistency: in practice, in moves, in off ice training.
2. Focus: on what my coach is telling me, on my body position, on what I've improved on - not what I'm doing wrong.
3. Stop: stop beating myself up when I don't get it right, stop psyching myself out, stop overthinking everything.
What is hard today, will one day be your warm-up.
