Removing permanent marker

Any ideas on removing permanent maker from boot soles?  The skate shop inked my name on the soles of my brand new boot (without asking!!!) and spelled my name wrong.

That's crazy!  Call the boot manufacturer and ask the skate shop to do it and take responsibility.

Are they leather on the bottom or other?

Sole paint.

You could take it back to your shop and tell them to fix it (free) or go to a shoe shop.

Maybe you will be lucky, and a little water will remove it. If not, try various solvents with magic marker on cheaper items, like paper or old leather shoes.

E.g., Nail Polish Remover, which Wikipedia says is either acetone or isopropyl alcohol.

I think alcohol is less likely to damage the leather, but might be wrong. Either may remove a bit of the water-proofing wax or coating. I hope the magic marker was on top of the water-proofing, rather than the other way around.

If the boot fitter / skate tech did anything else wrong, you will want the misspelled name to still be present, so you can point out to your friends how awful he/she is.  "He/She couldn't even get my name right."

If not, you can still have fun with the skate tech by pointing out his/her error (with a suitable pout). If he/she is any good, as rd350 pointed out, he will offer to fix it - but I'm not sure you should let him/her. You could fun him/her for years.

If mine did that, they'd be replacing them.  Sorry, but what they did is completely unacceptable and unprofessional.

I agree with Sarahspins too - if these are your brand new boots there's really no excuse. If they needed to identify them couldn't they have put them in a box or something???

Seriously, it's ridiculous.  I mentioned this to a coach whose students all get their skates from them, and they've never had this nonsense.  And really, how many ADULT sized figure skates are they selling?  The worst part is they tried to do some fancy script on them and it looks like a gangster tat. 

The problem is that the skate shop is run by my sharpener's wife, and my sharpener is the best I've found around here. 

The least damaging option in my arsenal (without doing some shopping for magic products) turned out to be tea tree oil.  A faint amount of sole paint was lost, but I was able to get most of the offending ink (my name) off.  The smaller notation on date of purchase didn't come off as easily, so I wasn't going to fight it and just accepted the faded version.  I'll discuss the issue with them when I go back in to have the rest of the screws put in.  They can touch up the waterproofing then.
