I just watched some of the Hip Hop [I think] dance movies, in the "Step Up" series. (They were on TV.) Not great movies, but the dancing was fun to watch.

Let's imagine incorporating Hip Hop moves in skate routines, especially the on-the-floor and inverted moves. (Sorry - I don't know the correct Hip Hop terminology. I'm don't even know which Hip Hop genres are  in those movies.)

Let's call the imaginary genre "Ice Dance: Street".

Anyone wanna post fun videos of skaters who did this?

There are skaters in hockey skates on youtube doing similar things to what you see in the movies..  if you search for xtreme (yes, without the e) ice skating quite a few will come up.

They also call themselves "freestylers" too...

The approved rhythms this year for junior short dance include hip-hop.  We will get to see what the actual ice dancers come up with :)

The other choice is swing - I bet we see more of that because it will be "easier" both to find music for ("clean" hip hop?) and choreograph on skates.

The mandatory rhythm is blues.

Oooh. Aaaah. These videos look like a lot of fun.

It's partly a return to the days of figure skating when it was a lot of people showing off tricks for fun, before the big figure skating organizations took over, formalized it, and made it look like ballet and ballroom.

I think rinks should start offering lessons in xtreme ice skating. It would be fun to do the moves that one could manage, though some of us could never do the fancy stuff, and rinks would have to pay attention to safety.

At the very least, more guys would get involved than in conventional figure skating.

It would be a great way to bring back the popularity of ice skating!

Thanks for pointing this out. Love it!
