Figure skates can be very expensive, and often require an long breaking in and/or modification phase, and their breakdown can affect athletic performance and injuries, so many of us worry about boot longevity. Increasingly, ordinary athletic shoes can also be fairly expensive, so it's a factor there too.

I'm not sure how well this page on factors contributing to shoe longevity relates to figure skating boots, but many of the same principles might apply:
