Crasche Middie Head Protection for Figure Skating

I found the material of the Crasche Middie to be really slippery so took the inserts out and put them into a cotton band. I was surprised just how thin they actually were. I also have a Forcefield headband and whilst the material is softer it is a lot thicker so I'm not sure if there's really much difference in the amount of protection they provide.
I'm considering an Ice Halo because they do seem much thicker but I can't find anywhere to actually try one and given how much I hate the Crasche material I don't want to just buy off the internet.

Eeek, those crasche pads are scarily thin.  And they're wasting a mm of precious possible compression thickness with the plastic backing.

If you've gotten to the point of re-engineering the band of the crasche, it's only a very small jump to just cutting up sheets of some polystyrene
packing foam or high density EVA foam and putting that inside a headband (aka a sewn up tube of fabric).   

Make one yourself and you get to exactly balance your level of protection with your level of feeling silly

My Crasche arrived today. I ordered a large but it is still snug (oversized head I guess). I took out the 2 side inserts and it fits like that, so I need to figure out how to modify a couple of inserts to give me room and protection. I am most concerned about back falls, then side impacts and lastly frontal impacts.

I recently took a bad backwards fall  and had an ice halo on. I apparently stepped on my blade while doing the the outside  Mohawk  in the Fourteen step.  I went straight back on to my back.   I believed the  Ice Halo saved me from a serious concussion.  However, I did manage to hit the upper back part of my head because the halo only provides about 2 inches of protection.  So I decided to order the Crashe and give it a try because it seems to go higher onto the head, in the back.  Once I received it I became concerned about how thin the padding is compared to the Ice Halo.  The Ice Halo is much thicker  (3-4 times), but the  Crashe  definitely provides a larger area of head protection.  My husband who is a  mechanical engineer, thinks that the Ice Halo will provide better impact protection due to the density of the padding. I am going to try and insert some additional padding in the Crashe.  (probably between the plastic and the material.
