A  collective, convulsive gasp cross the entire theatre when Vera Wang appeared. Many admissions among the young girls in the lobby afterward about tears over the footage of the charred skates in the wreckage.

I thought Vera Wang looked emaciated...my 10 yo dd had tears on her cheeks at the sight of the charred skates in the wreckage..young as she is, that moved her.

Purple Sparkly

Somebody should give Vera Wang a hamburger.

Pačiūžos

I don't want to start a roast of Vera Wang here, who clearly has some body image issues, but I was gratified that all these impressionable teenage girls in the crowd at RISE were uniformly aghast at her unhealthy appearance. On the way out, I heard one say, "Maybe the Memorial Fund could buy Vera Wang a sandwich!" And the replies were murmured agreement, no giggles.

It was hard to pay attention to what she was saying when it was impossible to stop counting her ribs. Yikes.

But I've been at rinks where coaches have been very specific about diet and weight, and know of one who will police the snack area and snatch a bag of chips or a cookie out of childrens' hands. The laws of physics are unchangeable and the best female jumpers seem to be built like young boys -- but there's room in the sport for so many body shapes, and I've seen some of the most beautiful, joyful skating by young women with hips and bosoms!

I was concerned when Dick Button raved that Bethenny Frankel had the perfect body shape for skating on the recent competition show, when I thought she looked kind of starved.

Pardon the verbiage, perhaps this is a discussion for another thread -- I plead newbie-ness.

Moving right along very quickly....

The encore showing of RISE is TOMORROW at 7:30pm local time.
If you missed it the first time, or just want to see it again, check out www.rise1961.com for theaters and tickets.

Sounds like a DVD with the show footage and additional clips/interviews is going to be sold towards the end of 2011.

I went to see Rise tonight and handed out the survey information cards.  En route to the theater, I missed the exit (GPS died again) so I was a little late, but it hadn't started yet when I got into the theater.  I went row-to-row and gave out the cards so I didn't have to leave my seat early.  There were less than 20 people in the theater.

Saw someone I knew, so I sat with her and we laughed at a lot of things that I had missed the first time around.  Example: a woman holds up her iPhone during Vera Wang's interview.  She might have been taking a photo or recording the interview, I don't know, but it was absurd.  When everyone was on stage for the last chat, with the filmmakers, I thought out loud "I wonder if they're wearing Vera Wang designs?"  My seatmate just cracked up.

There's a point where Matt Lauer says that this was the first event where every living US OGM winner have been together.  During the original airing, he (and Peter Carruthers) makes that comment, but we never actually SAW the OGM holders.  During this airing, they inserted the missing video footage of them all together on the red carpet.

They didn't correct Lauer's misspeak in saying that Lysacek created and choreographed one of the promotional skating routines.  It was actually Randy Gardner who choreographed all those events filmed at Nationals.

I have at least 80 of the exit cards left.  Guess I'll recycle them.

The Rise site's fundraising auction ends tomorrow:

http://auction.rise1961.com/

Interesting that no one bid on Peggy Fleming's Wine Tasting for Four package.
It includes four all-event tickets to the 2012 Nationals, which is worth the opening bid.

Maybe people are waiting to "snipe" it at the last moment.

Perhaps no one has bid on the wine tasting with Peggy Fleming because the photo sort of gives the impression that she's just birthed the bottle like a chicken lays an egg.  ;D

The television premiere of RISE will coincide with the release of RISE on DVD and Blu-ray. The DVD and Blu-ray launch will include a DVD of the original television broadcast of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 1961 U.S. Championships, held just weeks before the team perished in the crash, were the first U.S. Championships broadcast on national television.

Nice bonus feature: the 1961 US Champs TV broadcast.  Bittersweet to watch, I'm sure.

It did when it was the Outdoor Life Network, but it has a lot of other programming now, like the Tour de France, Davis Cup (tennis) and America's Cup (sailing). And NHL hockey.

I'll probably watch the broadcast and will definitely buy the DVD set. Thanks for the heads up.

A friend told me that RISE is finally coming out on Blu-ray and DVD very soon. Anyone know where we can get it? She also mentioned that there was another DVD on the 1961 U.S. Championships that is sold with it. We're so excited! Anyone know anything else?

Welcome to skatingforums!

A short time ago, I came across a site that seems to take orders for the DVD and Blu-ray disc(s).  The announcement earlier this month from the USFSA said that the sales would "coincide with" the movie being shown on Versus next month (10/22/2011)  (more details upthread a few posts)

Announcement(s): http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110921&content_id=25016124&vkey=ice_news
http://www.usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=47219&type=media

HOWEVER, the caveat is that I'm not sure if the DVD purchasing site is real or not, so until there's an official announcement, I wouldn't use it to order.  It could be a phishing site or it might not be working properly yet.

Please be patient a little longer - I'm sure they'll have things up and running soon.  If anyone hears more about the DVD/B-r sales, please post it here!

10/7/2011 Update: The store is now open!  (See post, below)

I DVR'ed the Versus broadcast, but my DVDs came in the mail, so I watched those instead.

Anyone else watch RISE or the 1961 Championships DVD?

I was traveling during the broadcast and didn't DVR, but am still waiting patiently for my DVD set to arrive.

Isk8NYC

I used Ten Mayflower's contact form to ask about the DVD's Region.  The reply from the company was that it is "Open region (good for all)."
