While our board does have a "Training Blades" post-count title, it was intended to be a joke.

I just found a patent application from the 1960's for just such a device!

4 runners aren't that far from this idea.

But my intuition says the skate would be hard to turn. Bad idea for a beginner at a crowded rink.

What are "4 runners?"  Do you mean double runner skates?  Double runner blades can't turn easily because they're flat, front to back - there's no curve at all.

Your intuition needs an adjustment.  By only putting the "training blades" at the heel, this design allows the rocker at the front to achieve the turn when the skater is ready for that skill.  They won't be able to use the edges very well until the trainers are adjusted upward, but it will let them turn.

The training blades don't really touch the ice unless one goes off balance. That being said, I think this can help you skate on flats, but not on edges.

Yes, 4 runners are double runner skates. They only cost a couple bucks, strap onto the little kid's shoes. You don't need to turn, because no one who uses them is interested in "fancy skating".

OK :) I accept my intuition was wrong. I was thinking the side runners touch the ice all the time.

I have a further "improvement". Make the whole blade wider. Make it the width of the boot: use the outsole as your blade. Much more stable. :)

Sorry, couldn't resist.  :(
