When I used to dance we often wore bras that had the straps go around our stomach instead of mid-back, and then had convertible straps that could go halter, criss-cross, wide or narrow on the shoulders.  There was almost always a way to configure the bra to an open back leotard.  It looked so much nicer than the clear straps so many people use today.

Yes I've seen the clear straps on women skaters at the Olympics. It looks tacky.

Skaters at that level should just have their dressmaker build a bra into the dress - then you don't have to worry about it! It's extremely easy to do while constructing the dress. You can add one in later but it's not as easy. Honestly, anyone who is having a dress made should discuss this with their dressmaker - I always make undergarments apart of my conversation with the client.
