Title: Skating on Thanksgiving
Post by: AgnesNitt on November 17, 2013, 10:51:24 PM
Usually I just go to the movies on Thanksgiving, but this year my rink is offering public, starting in the early evening. I'm tempted, but wondering if it's just going to be like Saturday nights. Anyone skate after 'the big lunch' to get away from football?

Haven't done it in years because our current rink closes on Thanksgiving, but it was ways empty, iirc.  I remember my mother getting ticked off that I wanted to skate instead of watching TV at home.

I generally go to an early session the next morning.  I think my family would kill me if I tried to go to the rink on Thanksgiving itself.

My rink has a "Skate Your Turkey Off" session on the night of Thanksgiving, but my family has an evening meal, so I've never gone. A lot of our local schools have the whole week of Thanksgiving off and so the rink adds extra publics all week. I went on Tuesday afternoon last year and it was pretty crowded.

Rinks are all closed here on Thanksgiving. The publics are brutal on the following weekend.

Has anyone gone to a "Black Friday" session? My rink has that, at a discounted rate. It's hard to say if it would be more or less crowded...I've never been to it.

I am not able to, because my rink is closed on Thanksgiving.

We're 2:30 eaters in my family, then there's "foh'bol" for the rest of the day. I usually go to a movie in the afternoon/ evening as I just can't stand it.  Usually the other women come with me after we've done the washing up, but this year I'm quite happily alone, since I'm not traveling until after T'day.

I'm actively looking for some ice.  I'll be out by the in-laws, and I think there's a temporary outdoor rink that might work.  I know it's only half the size of a normal rink, but at 8am on Thanksgiving it might be quiet, right?

It might be quiet, but it might not be open. Definitely check the hours beforehand.

I am reminded of a promotion that occurred this past Sunday where an allergy drug company gave away a free public session.  Over 300 people showed up.  Hope Thanksgiving at your rink isn't like that.

Our rink is also closed on most major holidays.  That's a pity this time around since my family is postponing Thanksgiving dinner until Saturday since our son (an ER nurse) has to work on Thursday.  So, I'll be off from work and pretty much free for the day but with no ice to skate upon unless things get V. cold outdoors!

Our rink is closed on Thanksgiving.. but they are open the day after, with an extra evening public session (which we don't normally have) too.

Have you ever been to the rink the day after Thanksgiving? Is it extra crowded?

My go to practice day is Friday. Day after Thanksgiving is a toss up. Everybody is either shoping, and it's empty. Or everyone wants to get the kids out of the house, and it's packed. Same thing for every weekend day from now til Valentine's day.

I haven't recently, but our rink is located in a shopping center so it does tend to be fairly busy just due to the location.

That's what I was thinking, too--could go either way.

My rink is in a rec center (so probably wouldn't be quite as busy a one in a shopping center) but it might be really busy on that day too. ???

Any time school is not in session the rinks are busy where I live.

Our rink usually does a free public session on Thanksgiving.  I believe that's actually what got us into skating.  We stepped on the ice-each child grabbed a hand and I went down backwards getting a nice bump on the back of my head.  I signed them up for lessons the next session.  We have a whole series of free session between this weekend and Christmas but I now don't go usually.  It's usually quite crowded.

I went to our rink's "Cheapskate" (discount prices) public session this morning--Black Friday. It was wonderful...it's been awhile since I've seen so few people on the ice!

I dropped in at my rink today as it was easier to park over there than to get into the mall parking lot. Anyway, freestyle was just over and there wasn't a big line for public. What it was like Thursday night, no idea.

We didn't go on Thursday since it's a free skating session (they only charge for skate rental) and that's usually very crowded.  We did go yesterday for a session and there were probably about 30-40 people there.  Definitely a change from the usual 2 p.m. public which might have 4-5 people but manageable.
