I thought I had started a thread for the Worlds, but I can't find it now.

Universal Sports has the worst action photographs I've ever seen. They have a shot of Alexander Majoroff (Sweden) facing the camera from the downside of an A-Frame spin.

Wow, I feel really out of the loop asking this question - seems like I should know, but help me out . . . what determines the skaters who must skate the preliminary round at Worlds? And how many of them continue to the short program?
-
Wondering why Kozuka (is that how you spell his name) had to qualify when he was leaps and bounds ahead of the pack?
From a post on FSU
A federation gets as many direct entries as the number of this federation's skaters in the top 18 for Singles, top 12 for Pairs, and top 12 (Euros, 4CC) or 15 (Jr. Worlds and Worlds) for Ice Dance in the corresponding discipline of the preceding season's same Championships.
Q: What happens when a nation has 2 (or 3) competition entries but only 1 (or 2) direct entry? How do they determine who gets the direct entries?
A: The skater(s) ranked higher in the ISU World Standings at the time when the competition entries are made must be given preference for the direct entries.
The competitor with the lower ISU World Standings ranking must be entered into the Preliminary Round.
The number of skater to get to the short program are:
Singles - 30 (18 direct entries, 12 from top preliminary round entries)
Pairs - 20 (12 direct entries, 8 from top preliminary round entries)
Dance - 25 (15 direct entries, 10 from top preliminary round entries)
Fewer qualify for freeskate.

Wow, those are some pretty amazing marks for Patrick, I can hardly wait to get home to watch. Plus Take 5 might be my all-time favourite program of his -- and that's saying a lot, he's had so many great ones.
It's funny, he struggled with his quad for so long ... and then once the pieces finally fell into place, it's now perfection, textbook. Hard to remember that he ever had problems with it.
-
Chan was great, no doubt about it. I watched his freeskate and thought that he looks like Jeffrey Buttle - debonaire and very much a dancer. I finally saw the interview where Patrick (once again) put his foot in his mouth.
Felt bad for Ryan Bradley, I had hoped he would place higher than 13th. Glad for Dornbush, though.
My DD insisted that the Russian skater who took the bronze medal was Plushenko! I cleared up the confusion, but said that it was good that Plushenko didn't skate this season. It gave his countryman a chance to shine.
I couldn't stay up to watch Pairs last night - how did the team do that had the nose-breaking SP?
-
Watching the Ladies SP this morning (but I'm listening to the Royal Wedding on TV)

(I don't know what language they're speaking, but it makes me feel like I'm actually there, lol.)
Miki Ando's dress is stunning - like a wedding dress from Kleinfeld's in Brooklyn, NY.

Which interview was that? I must have missed it. What did he say?
Can't say I'm surprised, though -- he does share a lot of skating qualities with Buttle, too bad he doesn't have the same skills in tact and eloquence.

Meghan and Eric finished in 7th. I'm so proud of them, great result for their first year together ... regardless of the rather dramatic injury!
Haven't watched the women's short yet (and no, it wasn't because I was watching the royal wedding!), but I'm glad at least to see that the marks are a somewhat closer than they were for the men's. Esp. for 1st-2nd, and then 3rd all the way down to 8th. Anything can happen. Sad Cynthia wasn't able to put it together, though, when she's been skating so brilliantly all year.

The interviewer asked him a badly-worded question and I think he either heard it wrong or misspoke.
She said something like "You're channelling Tiger Woods, etc. and will you be dominating from now on liek them?" It was loud and I really felt like she changed sentences mid-stream in listening to it on the broadcast.
He first answered "Yes" but went on to say that the psychology strategy paid off and he really wants to shine in the next season or two. He never actually said "I VILL BE ZE DOMINATING FORCE IN MENS FIGURE SKATING!" He didn't seem elitist when he said it, but apparently the web went wild, saying he was arrogant.
I think he just heard her wrong, expecting "Did your channelling Tiger Woods' dominating the field help you today?" He also might have just said "yes" as a noise word, which isn't uncommon. I know english is his first language and he's from Canada, not Asia, but many second-generation asian-americans say "yes" to mean "I heard you and now I'll answer your question." It's like a stall tactic, but in this case, it really was not an appropriate response to the garbled question.

Y'know, I'm no ice dance expert, but I loved what Capellini and Lenotte (Italy) just did. They are adorable and he must be incredibly strong. It wasn't the most elegant move, but he just did the wildest lift I've ever seen. She crossed her legs, upright and he held her up about 3' from his body with one hand between her legs. If you didn't look at the hold, it was enchanting to watch - it looked like she was floating on air. He wasn't showing any strain at all! Incredible! Such a fun routine.

I didn't look at the scores, but it looks like Ryan Bradley's spins were more of an issue than the jumps.

One interesting feature: at 5:15, he starts a forward spin entrance only to immediately change feet into a backspin-forward spin combination with a few changes of position. I wonder if that's allowed for lower-level skaters who have backspin entry issues, at least as a training tool? It was only one or two revolutions before he pressed into the backspin. Things that make me go hmmm....

Where do our two US ladies have to place to allow 2 ladies to go to Worlds next year? Are we down to just one?
