FSWer's On-Ice Public Skate-Training Report 5/15/11
« Reply #102 on: May 15, 2011, 04:42:43 PM »
Ok my fellow Skaters...here it is.....

A staff got me to Newington Arena a little before Noon (the start of Public Skate). I went in and registered with my Skate Passes and signed in. I then went into the Skate-Shop to get my Skates sharpened. It was $6.00 to sharpen. I also asked about my rust. Which is on the side of a Blade (the part that doesn't touch the ice),and the guy said that it should just ware off. I don't know if I'm alone with this. But anyone here who has had it there might know what I mean. I then went to sit down and put my Skates and Gaurds on (a friendly warning from FSWer...NEVER...I REPETE...NEVER put Gaurds on OVER newly sharpened Blades!!!! Yes you've guessed it. My thumb got cut..and maybe down near my Leg. If any skater here has any advice they can offer me on how to get gaurds on safely AFTER sharpening,I would really appreciate it. But at this point. I think I'm getting skates done AFTER I get off the ice!!! (If there's time of course). Anyway I then went in to the Rink, put on my Skates, and took my Gaurds off with my Gloves and got on the ice. It was a rather small Group today. Made up of both Public Skaters AND Freestylers. One skater actually learning to be an Ice-Dancer with a Partner. One of the Freestylers turned out to be one I haven't seen in a long time. She even remembered me. I myself practiced a couple of Jumps,Spins, and EVEN for the first time (or so I believe I noticed I did anyway)...actually got my right Leg up and out in the front!!! I tried also a bit to see by counting how long I could hold it. I think I got to 4-5 sec. At the end I went around the Rink 1 time, then got off the ice. When I got out I met up with 2 of the Skaters. My friend and another Skater who was inside. We got talking, and it turns out that the other Skater actually got to coach with Melissa Gregory and Denis. From what I understand they just came up to her at a place were they all happened to be,and they asked her to help cooach. So it turns out there friends. I also watched the Freestyle Session, and also happened to see 2 sets of kids and Parents on the ice. So I told someone who I thought MIGHT be going into Freestyle. Or possibly just working, and she said she'd check it out. It turned out they weren't supposed to be there on ice. I also have a question. Now that this has been mentioned. I got a flyer from my Rink that's holding what there calling a "Finer Edge Figure Skating Seminar" Run by International Skaters/Coaches. My question is...when a Rink has 2 Rinks. Would they be using BOTH Rinks for the Seminar? Or just 1? Because on the back it says the following...The Seminar will be closed to the Public. Only paid Participants, their coaches and Chaperone will be allowed to watch any On-Ice or Off-Ice Sessins of the Seminar.
Does that sound like they would be using BOTH Rinks and there'd be NO Public Skate or nothing else for the Public? Because if they ARE having it WHILE there IS Public Skate. There is NO WAY they could keep on lookers away. As the Public is there. Is there anyone here who has had or seen a seminar like this that can confurm this? Afte that I came home.

You'll have to ask at your rink to find out how the seminar is scheduled.  Most likely, it will only be on one rink and they'll have public skate on the other rink as usual.  If the seminar is using both rinks, they'll just cancel public skate.  I'd be surprised if they'd need both rinks.  It doesn't surprise me that they won't let you watch unless you pay for the seminar, though.  I don't know how your rink is set up, but at most I've been to there are doors that lead to each ice surface.  The public might be in the building, but they'll have a monitor at the door and you won't be allowed in to that rink if you're not part of the seminar.

I serously hope there not saying the Public can't just do something as simple as go up the the window or Doors of the Rink and peak in. I can't see why you can't even watch one. What if you know a Freestyler?

I imagine you could peek in the door without a problem.  They won't let people watch without paying because then they would sort of be getting a lesson for free.  At a seminar, the guest coaches work with skaters and the skaters' own coaches watch so that they learn new ways of teaching things.  Anybody just watching would learn these things, too.  It's not fair if some people have to pay to see the seminar and others don't.

When we got there I put al 3 of us on my Skate Passes, and wend into the Rink to put on my skates while she had her kids fitted. I was already on ice by the time they came in. The Boy took to the ice very quickly. But the girl would not get on. I tried a couple of Jumps. As well as practiced skatng backward. I also practiced spinning. After that we left and I came home.

Ok my fellow Skaters...here it is....

I got to the Rink a little after 11:00. Public Skate didn't start until 12:00. So after I checked in at the Desk with my Passes and signed in,I went to get a soda to drink and watch the Freestylers from the window. At about quarter to 12, I got my Skates and Gaurds on and walked into the Rink. The Zomboni was just finishing up. I then got on the ice and skated around and tried a couple of Jumps. I also tried lifting my Foot. But ended up falling on both Jumps and that. I also practiced Spining. Along with some Ice-Dancing (Solo). I also offer a tip today. I don't know if very many Skaters know this...but if you start by standing still, and make arm-circles in the direction you want to go. The Arm-Circles will help to control if you go Backward/Forward. At least that's 1 trick FSWer has to offer here today. Also, just a word of warning for when drying off your Blades...please be careful about getting cut by your toe-pick on your thumb. Yes,it's already happened to me twice. So if anyone has any tips for me on how to dry a sharpened blade. I would really apreciate it. Or do I just need to be careful doing it? LOL. Anyway, after Public Skate I had Lunch at the Rink and watched the Freestylers for an hr. BTW. everyone. Tribute to Life coming to Newington Arena Aug.,13th. A Sat. More to come.

Wow FSWer- you are trying jumps...that's pretty impressive!  Do you take any lessons at all?

As for drying off the blades, you really do just have to be careful. Sorry to hear your got cut.

I use thick microfiber hand towels and fold them in half.  They are very plush and dry much better than any other towel I've tried.  And because of the plushness, I never even come close to getting nicked.

I use washclothes and just hold the skate while drying the blade and my whole skate.

Ok my fellow Skaters!!!! It's a good one...here it is.....

I got to the Rink super early.About an hr. before Public Skate, and Registered and signed in at the Desk with my Skate Passes. They then let me in to see the Before Public Skate Freestyle Session. I sat up in the Bleachers for about an hr. It was really interesting to watch. After the sesion,a mother of one of the kids even gave me a CD. that they didn't want. As I was interested in the music. When I finally got on the ice. I just skated around. As I wanted to be careful and make sure the CD. in my coat didn't break. A very nice skater (who was actually a coach visiting) came over and even helped me learn how to tie my laces snug. As well as even corrected me on how I was using my feet to skate (I've been pushing off with 1 Foot). LOL. I also skated around with her and torward the end when around the Rink once. Then got off. I then went back to see the after Public Skate Freestyle Session (yes,I got to see both). Then went home.
