Title: What boots and blade do you wear???
Post by: TropicalSk8ter on June 02, 2014, 09:27:24 PM
Hey guys, so I was going thru the forum and I couldn't find any topic of what's everybody sporting in this awesome sport LOL.
Like to see what everyone swears by and what everybody dislikes! Yes I'm being nosey but I can't help it LOL.  I'm wearing jackson premieres and was on coronation ace but turns out the blade was to short so I ended up taking my partners old flat pattern99. He's in the process of getting Eclipse Pinnacles for his Jackson Elite boots. Thankfully we found out that we have the same foot size so we could share boots and I will be able to try the Pinnacles. So that's what we are/going to be wearing.  Your turn to share :P

Jackson Elite Plus (because I'm heavier than average) with Ultima Matrix Legacy blades (because I need something that lasts as long as possible between sharpenings).

Jackson Freestyle boots with Ultima Mirage blades.

The boots are heat moldable but have never fit quite right even with repeat moldings.  My heels move in these boots and I'm developing a bursa on the top of my left foot and bunions on my right foot.  Yesterday while wiping down the blades after skating, a friend pointed out that the right boot (my landing foot) is developing the typical deep crease one sees when boots start to break down.  These skates are about two and a half years old and I have roughly 500 hours on them (10 blade sharpenings).  Although I'm a tad disappointed with the fit and the fact that they seem to be short lived, they were good reentry level boots when I came back to skating after being off ice for over 30 years.  This summer I plan to make an appointment with Mike Cunningham down at Skater's Paradise and retire these puppies.  Here's hoping the replacement boots will fit well and wear like iron.

I'm wondering if all entry level boots are short lived? Mine as well lasted really short it didn't even make the one year anniversary of having them lol. The Riedell 910ls . Now I have the Jackson premiere they feel much stiffer and much more comfortable. Good luck on finding your right fit boot!

Jackson Elite Supreme (custom width because I have very wide lady feet) and MK Professional Parabolic blades. :)

And black laces currently, switched from hot pink. My rotation is black, hot pink and purple. Maybe a blue will make the rotation one day.

Jackson synchro, extra-wide ball and split width, with MK Pros.  Love the setup.  Not looking forward to hunting out new boots when the time comes, as the model I'm wearing suits me perfectly.  I recently looked at the current version of my boots in the pro shop, but they now seem to be skary "dance-short" in the shaft.

Riedell 255 TS with Aspire XP blades.

High end for an entry level/first boot but I needed a wide toe box and this was the best match.

Let's see...Back in the day I wore Sp Teri Deluxe with Pattern 99 blades.

After a long absence from the sport, I currently wear custom Harlick Competitor+ X-Line with John Wilson Coronation Ace Blades.

Right now I have a new pair of Harlick High Tester X-Line  - which I sent out to Harlick to have the soles sealed with their recommended Chem-Glaze (with the glitter of course!).  Once I get these returned, I will then have my current freestyle boots to switch over to "figures" or "patch" blades.

Yes, I am a fan of Harlicks.  Most people think they are heavy and clunky.  From working on my feet for over 12 hours a day for the last 20 years, my feet have gotten wider.  The x-line design that Harlick now offers , fit my feet like a glove.  I am happy that I still can purchase a stock boot (with some mods) and have happy feet for skating.   :WS:

Also - Harlick will re-last or spot stretch skate boots.  I had this done to my current skates prior to returning to the ice.

So I am currently looking for that perfect pair of freestyle blades for my new boots!

Was originally in Jackson Mystiques with their stock blades.

Back in March I realised my feet were sliding, heels lifting, I needed new boots. Went to a reputable fitter, and ended up in Edea Overtures with Coronation Ace blades.

Absolutely love them, no more sliding feet, and everything is improving nicely in my skating now :)

Yes, I got them! I am so so so happy with them. :) took all of 2 days to break them in and a couple blisters, but they just work with all I've been doing. And besides, the blisters are results of 5 hours STRAIGHT of skating. :)) It's nice to not have to worry about boots that could fall apart on you any time :)) And I'm enjoying jumping with that crosscut toepick!

Have had them for a month...and can you believe, moved up 2 levels in that time span!

I just bought new skates-Riedell 255 with Eclipse blades.  Between going 1/2 size smaller, the stiffer boot and the different toe pick it's been an adjustment but I like them.  I had Riedell's before-I can't remember the number 117 maybe?  They were an recreational skating boot and I don't think they are made anymore or the number changed or something.

I have Wifa dance boots and John Wilson dance blades.
I have skated for 35 years and only once didn't have Wifa boots and I went back to Wifa.  I love them.  I am getting a new pair of Wifa dance boots and will most likely need new blades.  If I can hold off to next year I'll get MK otherwise it's more John Wilson since they are cheaper.

Risport RF3 Super with Eclipse mist blades. The Risports were bought after my botched Gam skates almost gave me a complex.  The blades were picked based off of some other brands I asked about... the dealer rec'd them because my feet aren't growing and they will last longer (more sharpening surface).

I'd worn Gam for years, then switched to Jackson, and then back to Gam... where I had the worst customer service experience ever.  My skates were warped and it took forever for me (and my local skating store) to get Gam to even look at them.  When they did, they admitted the skates were 'off' and refunded my money.  Despite this, I'd go back to Gam.  Best fitting skates for my feet.  And to be honest the Risports hurt like all heck to break in.  Wouldn't want to go through that again.

Yes, entry-level boots are short lived if you are skating with good knee/ankle bend and skating often (and especially if you're jumping).  Entry level boots are designed for skaters who aren't bending a lot yet and aren't putting much pressure on the boots.  Even if you aren't landing double or triple jumps, if you are a full-grown man, you will need to get boots that are a little stiffer.  You weigh more than the average 80-120lb skater that most of these boots are design for, and that will put more pressure on the boots with each stroke and jump landing.
I am in my third pair of SP Teri KT2 boots and my blades are Wilson Gold Seal.  I love the Gold Seal blades. :)

That's pretty much the reason I chucked mine. Foot doctor said it wasn't worth getting custom insoles. Other people also complain about them. Maybe it's just not meant for adults?

My skates: SP Pro Teri with MK Professional blades. I like how the blades will carry me through higher levels.  :spin:

Got my SP-Teri KT-2 Boots in.

Fit is great, but one more area I need to get punched out when I get around to it.

Kept my MK Pro Blades.  Most of the issues that I had were almost assuredly caused by the Boots I was wearing.  Everything has improved, literally since the first time I got on the ice in the new boots.

I can almost pull in a Scratch Spin now, which was impossible in the old boots (but using the same blade).  Jump landings are better cause my heal doesn't lift almost half an inch in the boot and I can actually put some pressure on the front of the boot (Feel when the blade touches down a bit better).

I can roll to toe on Axels and Loops went from impossible to trivial.  Salchows are decent.

I tried on a pair of Eclipse Pinnacle blades with a temp mount and returned them immediately.  There is some difference/benefit, but not enough to pay $400.  The Toe Pick on them is barely an improvement over the MK Pro.  It basically felt the same to me, so I'm gonna keep an eye on eBay for some 10" Visions or Phantoms while I think that part over a bit.

With the boot fitting/performing right, I no longer feel the urgency to upgrade blades (and I wasn't about to break in new boots with new blades on them, anyways).

Post by: Nate on August 12, 2014, 06:13:02 PM
Follow Up: Gonna have to upgrade blades as I need more boot clearance.

Due to the change in boot weight, I've basically lost all of my toe jumps, but edge jumps are much improved. Timing is kind of miffed on the toe jumps. Not brave enough to try doubles in them. Did some of my best axes ever today. 3 in a row.

Nothing like landing a jump and then ending up on the side of the boot sole instead of the blade.

I hate the small pick on Gold Seal/Pinnacle. Might have Paramount make me a Gold seal with a P99. they say they can do that.

Gonna take a break until then, cause it's hard to accomplish much when you can't even do decent crossovers!

Me and my boyfriend are on the edea concertos and matrix elite now and it feels really weird compared to what we've worn before.  They definitely feel that the heel is higher and it's going to take some time getting used to. The blades are amazing love the stainless steel edges, they feel much more crisp and more bite on the ice. The wait was an unexpected two months for the new unexpected equipment but we are happy with it.

Blades should hopefully be in today, hopefully.

I was going to get the Ultima Elite but the wait time (2-3 weeks) was too long and Jackson Ultima was out of 10" blades.  So I went with the Eclipse Infinity instead.  Don't think I could deal with a Matrix blade.  They're too light and I prefer a bit of weight.

Put the Infinity blades on.

That toe pick destroys the ice the moment it touches it. Biggest divots ive ever seen from a jump I've done. My take offs on the toe jumps I tried were a ton more stable and I even found myself spotting my landings a lot less than usual as a result.

Didn't try any edge jumps cause I didn't use my tongue lace bar and it started twisting and popping out before I got to them.

Spinning seems a bit easier since the spin ticker is closer to where my body naturally wants to balance (on my foot), and getting to the tor pick in edge jumps and axel take offs is a lot easier. Also, I can get to the toe pick easier (it's "right there").

Will probably take me only 1-2 sessions to fully adjust to them. I should be able to do literally everything in them already (tried a double toe loop). Did some 3 turns, brackets, and other turns and they were fine.

The metal feels to have a different run than my professionals, though...

But, I felt a lot more balanced overall..

I will know for sure tomorrow after all placebo effect wears off, though.

Biggest thing I'll have to get used to is the straight cut picks. The difference between them and the cross cut were clearly apparent to me

Nate, have you ever been on Pattern 99's or Phantoms?  Those are also known for leaving huge divots because of the larger top pick compared to Coro Ace/Professional/Gold Seal's configuration, so it would make sense since the infinity is supposed to be similar to the pattern 99.
Title: Re: What boots and blade do you wear???
Post by: Nate on September 02, 2014, 06:31:44 PM
I don't think I ever pick in with the top pick. It's the large master pick that is ripping the ice up. Plus the straight cut teeth dig a lot deeper than I'm used to.

The Ice at that rink was softer than I'm used to, so maybe I was just picking in harder than I needed to since I wasn't used to it.

The extra travel time of the pick digging in the ice instead of just jamming and popping me up was interfering with the timing on my takeoffs.

I can definitely feel the flatter rocker profile, but don't think I'd call these a clone since the stanchions and tail are about the same as my MK Professionals. That being said, the Pro is a combination blade and I haven't really checked how it compares to Visions outside of the pick cluster. They may be lower and shorter than those.

Another skater here has Visions and the pick cluster is like that of a Pattern 99 (though slightly smaller), but have a ridiculous spin rocker (like a Pro/Gold star) and I couldn't fathom skating on them.

Update: Oh My God... My spins are so much better. I don't rock back and forth and I just go right to the spot where my body naturally wants to balance. I made a great choice going to the flatter rocker profile. Did everything up to Axes just fine. Tried some double Toes but I have to adjust to the lower weight and straight cut teeth that dig into the ice an inch or so before I can fix the those.

Hey guys, I wanted to bring this thread back since it did so well the first time. Just to see what ya'll are skating on now. Did you guys love the equipment you were skating on four years ago, so you did a repeat? Or did you hate your equipment and upgraded to something different that better suited you? As I said before I'm super nosey so I'm just dieing to know. Me and my boyfriend took a break for about year or so and we've both put in an order for Jackson elite boots. My elites will be paired with Eclipse infinity blades and my boyfriend's elites will be paired with Apex Supreme. Happy skating ya'll!

Good for you!  Glad to see you back.

My Jackson Classiques turned out to be way too big, and after struggling with them for a while (three layers of insoles, etc.) I finally moved up to Jackson Elles (stock Mirage blade) about three years ago.  And from an 8C to a 7B, which my skate tech (not the one who sold them to me) still thinks might be a bit big.

She is now in Jackson Debut Fusion Standards (size 3 1/2) with Eclipse Mist (size 8 1/2) Coro Ace/MK Pro "clones".  These are the old model replaced by the stainless Eclipse Aurora.  She's been on the blade for 5 months and in the boots for about 1 month.  Her previous boot/blade was the Jackson Elle with the stock Mirage.  Once we changed blades her spins were vastly improved.  Now in the new boots she's getting bigger jumps.  Working on her Axel now, wish I could say she's getting close, but no.

I think we're lucky in the sense that so far, stock Jackson boots fit her feet just perfectly.  This new pair of Debuts had no break in at all, just heat molded and done.  We bought them on a Friday and she passed her Preliminary MITF test in them the following Wednesday.  As a side note on the blade fitting, Jackson's blade size chart recommended a size larger that would have fit flush toe to heel.  That didn't seem quite right so we used the 8 1/2 instead of the 8 3/4 Jackson's chart recommended.  That gives the traditional 1/4" gap at the heel.

Interesting anecdote I'll share.  She skates at 2 rinks.  One rink, where the elite skaters train many FS and almost all dancers are in Edea, FS coaches are mostly SP-Teri, younger dance coaches Edea, older ones, Klingbeil/Harlick.  Her other rink is Sp-Teri and Harlick dominant.  I don't think I've seen one Edea there.  Coaches at that rink are in Sp-Teri and Harlick with Wilson and MK blades.

When I asked all her coaches at both rinks about boots not one recommended Edea.  Blade recommendation was universally MK Pro.  I couldn't spend the $$$ on that blade for a few months of use so I got lucky with the closed out clone (almost, pick on Mist is bigger than MK Pro) Mist and bought 3 pairs in 3 sizes for a little more than 1 pair of MK Pros would have cost.  We have one more pair to use then we'll have to decide whether to stick with that profile or move on.  Boots were an easy choice, blades are so much more challenging because you just don't know until you try.  We almost tried the Aurora under the 60 day NQA return policy, but the fitter recommended using that option later when the $$$ go way up for her blades.

Still in my split-width Jackson Premieres with a new set on order since they are breaking down. It's taking far longer than last time to get them in.

Previously in Riedell Royals and Wilson Coronation Aces for mucho years.  Late 2014 switched to Jackson Elite Suedes (last model in traditional leather) and Wilson Coronation Aces.  Same boots since but switched blades to Eclipse Auroras and then to Paramount 440C Freestyle 12".

If you talk to enough people, and enough fitters, one thing that becomes obvious is that different peoples' feet fit different brands and models of boot differently, and that there is no such thing as a good choice for everyone. Oddly enough, that seems to be true even for custom boots. Also that getting the right fitter matters at least as much as getting the right brand and model.

And, for some strange reason, even some people with very good fitters, who do all the "right" things, end up with boots that don't work for them. I don't completely understand why that is true. However, to some extent, they are not precision crafted, and aren't always made to the desired shape. In addition, I suspect current foot shape measurement techniques aren't as good as they should be.

The only boots that fit me fairly perfectly were the Riedell 220's (old style, single leather thickness - the newer Riedell 220's were much stiffer) I bought at Play-It-Again Sports - my first pair of skates. They shouldn't have fit, as I have completely the wrong foot shape for Riedells - but were flexible enough to mold to my feet anyway. Of course, that flexibility doubtless played a part in the leg I broke... I tried once another pair of single layer leather boots (Risport dance boots, which were almost new), but they broke down in about 2 or 3 weeks - apparently, though I'm not a very good skater, single-layer-leather isn't good enough once you have fairly deep edges, which is one thing my ice dance coaches had emphasized a lot (they said the side or top of the boot should brush the ice, though I never quite got there consistently, except in crossover and progressive underpushes), despite my other limits. Apparently, you have to accept relatively stiff boots to avoid rapid breakdown if you edge much, not just if you jump.

I've gone back to my mostly broken down 12 or 13 year old Klingbeil custom Dance boots, because they are finally somewhat comfortable, and because I don't jump enough for the relative lack of support to matter. Every once in a while I have to re-stretch the boot near the toes and ankle bones, and make myself new insoles, probably because they were fit wrong by the wrong custom fitter/skate tech, and because I didn't realize that you can take custom boots back to the manufacturer and get them re-done right, when they are fairly new.

My experience with other types of shoe has been much better. I can make do for a long time with fairly cheap tennis shoes, as long as they fit in the first place, and provide a fair bit of support.  (Though the very cheapest tennis shoes did break down once I started going to the gym much.) But I don't edge normal shoes much the way I edge skates... I make my own custom-fit insoles for them too, which plays a major role in making the fit better, and my insoles cushion impacts better. My XC ski boots and hiking boots never wore out, though in retrospect they fit poorly, which contributed to numerous ankle sprains.

I didn't like the Coronation Ace blades I bought first, but that may be because they were warped - sold to me by the same fitter/tech who misfit the Klingbeils. :( I switched to MK Dance, and loved them.

I switched to Ultima Matrix I blades (the ones that had the interchangeable runners) some time ago, because, the were cheaper MK Dance, and because I thought the idea of quickly switching between freestyle and dance blades sounded cool, though it turned out to be harder than I thought, because the bolts are trouble prone. When Ultima stopped making them, I bought a sufficient number of runners (several Dance runner pairs, as well as a Supreme freestyle pair, and a Synchro pair, as well as some extra bolts) to last me the rest of my lifetime. It took me a long time to get used to the different shape Ultima blades had, but I am sort of used to them now.

Anyway, it is wonderful that you (TropicalSk8ter, the o.p.) are fairly happy with your current boots. Some people never get there.

My daughter age 7 wears Risport Excellence size 205 and Coronation Ace blade size 7 3/4".  This is her 5th pair or Risports, but this current model is now discontinued.  When her foot grows she'll go into the new Risport Electra Light size 210 with Gold Seal blades size 8".  She is working on double toe and double flip, pre juvenile Moves.  She has tried on most of the major brands but refuses to wear anything but Risport.

I am currently in Riedell Bronze Stars with a Coronation Ace blade. My first pair of real skates  Since I bought the boots on ebay with very little guidance or knowledge, they do not fit well. Much too narrow and at least a full size too long. I am currently working on axels and have quite a bit of life left in these boots. When I am ready for new boots (and every time my foot cramps, I feel ready  :o ) I am planning on going to visit Bruce in Colorado Springs for a pair of Edeas. He's fitted both of my adult skating pals and they're thrilled with their boots. My coach also recently switched and she recommended that I do the same. After watching the Olympics, it seems like Edeas are taking over the world!

Jackson Elles with the stock Ultima Mirage blade. I've been in them since November and they seem to be fine for me at my current level (just passed Adult 3 as I'm re-learning all my basics after a decade off the ice). I probably could have done with a half size larger, but they've broken in sufficiently that I'm not in pain like I was the first couple of times out. :)

My Jacksons have started becoming unbearably painful - I suspect more to do with my feet than anything else - so I got fitted for and ordered a new pair of Edea Choruses. Will still be in the Coronation Aces, but need to buy a shorter size as the Edea sole profile is smaller.

I'm a beginner (Adult 4) and just got my first pair of 'real' skates last Saturday.  Jackson Competitors with Aspire XP blades, bought them used but they were only worn twice before. I should probably note that a actual skate tech measured my feet and made sure they were the right fit. I was skating on Rec skates for 6 months which is why I call my new skates 'real' skates.  My feet hate me right now but it will be absolutely worth it soon! (...I hope)

My first pair of real skates as an adult (I had skated as a kid) were Reidell either Bronze or Silver stars with Coronation Ace blades - (this was back in about 1986 so the skates were different then) - BUT it is interesting that I had the same problems - they were too long and too narrow -

I liked the Aces of course -

After that I became a dedicated SP Teri girl - much better skate for me (and WAY before the Edea was invented as far as I know) -

But it is interesting that you had the same experience as I did -

Two new pairs in my skating family yesterday. My Jackson Premieres with old MK Pro blades (thank goodness they transferred). Hurt like heck when I skated yesterday--need to heat mold and then move the right blade somewhere else. I couldn't find an edge to save my life on the right. Left is fine. Both inner ankle bones were painful.

Granddaughter got her first pair of new (as opposed to used) skates yesterday. Fitter tried her in Jackson and Reidell (sp?), but thought her foot looked more Reidell than Jackson. Elizabeth like the the Reidell better because "the inside is blue" so she's in a size 11 Reidell Opal. She *is* four, but she was excited about getting new skates. She says she fell once during LTS, but got right back up. She is really enjoying skating and asks to go!

Riedell Silver Stars with an Ultima Freestyle blade.

These took me a while (well, I've had the blades since my first 'real' pair of skates) because my feet are weird. I ended up in semi-customs with a split width.

I'm wondering if all entry level boots are short lived? Mine as well lasted really short it didn't even make the one year anniversary of having them lol. The Riedell 910ls . Now I have the Jackson premiere they feel much stiffer and much more comfortable. Good luck on finding your right fit boot!

Ripping the ice all day!

I don't think they do. Boots I've worn that lasted only 6-8 months despite being a basic level skater for me included the Riedell Stride Riedell 910 Now started to break down the Jackson Debut. (I had overly large freestyles when I started)

The Riedells would soften and crease on me. The Jackson's stay stiff but the padding starts to break down and I would imagine after that goes the stiffeners then the leather.

I have new customs in process which supposedly be ready in 10 days.
