This is a short workshop, but if you're in the area, you could go visit the Grand Ole Opry afterwards!

JoJo Starbuck - Skating With A Star

We are proud and excited to welcome JoJo Starbuck to the Scott Hamilton Skating Academy and Ford Ice Center from March 23-24th! JoJo is a 3x U.S. Figure Skating Pair Champion and 2x Olympian American figure skating champion. She made history in 1968 with her partner, Ken Shelley, as the duo became the youngest pairs team in the U.S. to ever be sent to the Olympic Winter Games. After winning bronze at the World Championships in 1971 and 1972, JoJo and Ken were inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

In her professional career, JoJo has partnered Olympic Champion John Curry in Ice Dancing on Broadway. She staged and choreographed "Skates of Gold", the first international figure skating event devoted exclusively to Olympic gold medalists. For over 15 years, JoJo has produced the celebrated "Opening of The Rink at Rockefeller Center". She also serves as the Head Pro and spokesperson for The Rink where she continues to run her popular "JoJo's Cool Workout Classes".

This sounds interesting because it is fairly close geographically, and SkateGeek says good things about JoJo. Thanks for the information.

EDIT: I just checked my calendar, and of the three scheduled events on my March calendar, this falls right on top of the big one (Tax prep with accountant in Columbus). Doggone it!

Last summer, my home rink was shut for major renovation, so I went to another rink.  One day, during morning public session, one woman starting doing figure 8's the way they did back in patch days (I had seen TV footage):  over and over and over ... FO, FI, BO, BI, with paragraph loop transitions.  When she finished, I looked at the tracings, they were all within an ~1/2" wide band.  I said, "Wow, that's incredible.  My coach sometimes reminisces about her patch days, but I've never seen it done before."  She smiled, and said thanks.  I skated over to the guard (whom I had become friends with):  "Hey, you see that incredible stunt that lady just pulled off?"  She asked, "Don't you know who she is?"  "No, never saw her before."  "That's JoJo Starbuck."

I was at a practice session for the 2015 US Nationals in Greensboro and a number of single, pairs and ice dance skaters were practicing. At one point Brian Boitano started doing figures and challenged the competing skaters to trace his pattern. Several of the competitors basically said "How do you do that?". No one was able to come close to his patterns, especially loops.

I'm going to this!  It's at one of my local rinks.  I'm not sure if I'll attend the off-ice portions, since between the arthritis and hypermobility there are a lot of positions and movements that make my back and hips ache, and I don't want to hurt myself so that I can't participate in the on-ice portion.  Perhaps I'll come and just watch the first day, and do the bits that looks safe on the second.  (There's a deal where it's half price for club members, so I don't feel so bad about skipping portions.)

If anyone is coming from out of town, beware that rush hour traffic out that way is brutal.  After 3, it will take you 45 minutes to get there on Friday if you're coming from the downtown area or other points north, east, or west.  After 4, count on 1-1.5 hours.

Have fun!!  I just looked at the calendar and realized that she's also going to be at a figures workshop in NJ the next afternoon (Sunday).  I'm signed up for that one.  Busy lady!

I wish her "tour" would include nearby Columbus, Ohio.  :(

Would your club be willing to host a workshop in Columbus, OH?  At this stage of the game, you'd have to foot the bill for expenses since it's too late to piggy-back on her existing travel in that area.

I can guarantee that our local club here in Athens, OH would have no interest whatsoever.  :(

There are some active clubs in Columbus though. I wish that one of them would take up the mantle. To me, it would be worth a secondary membership in another nearby club to tap into appealing workshops.

Columbus has a plethora of rinks to choose from. OSU has one rink, and Chiller has 7 sheets of ice  (and more planned) in 4 different locations, so finding ice time for a workshop should be straightforward.
