Title: Miss Michigan Contestant's Talent? Figure Skating!

With clearance from representatives of the Miss Michigan Scholarship Program, [Alicia] McInerney will perform a figure skating routine on synthetic ice when she competes for the Miss Michigan title.

One of my skating students this year submitted a video of her performing a competition program for her school's Talent Show.  It was a big hit, from what I've heard, but to lay down 24 sf of plastice and skate live - that's pretty gutsy.

Good luck to Alicia McInerney!

I'd give up my dining room for that surface!

There are places you can buy it...

A friend of mine put a few sheets of synthetic ice out for a skater get-together in her company. Sadly I did not get to skate on it, but I was concerned about flattening the edges anyways :)  Synthetic ice is not the easiest to skate on!

There's a skater at my rink who bought some synthetic ice, although not more than enough to do more than spin or work on small bits of footwork. She says she doesn't use it much. I get the sense that having it there all the time without any of the other things that go into skating practice kills most of her motivation.

I'm really eager to see what a program on 24 square feet of synthetic ice will look like! I'd be terrified of skating off of it.

Yeah, no kidding, that's like a 4x6 sheet.. I can't imagine that you would be able to do much in that area.  I skated on synthetic ice once and we had about 400sqft and it felt almost impossibly small and it was very difficult to set up for spins and jumps... a normal sized hockey rink is about 17,000sq.ft. so 24sq.ft. is not much to work with at all.. unless they meant 24 feet on each side, but even that is still a relatively small area.
