Title: ---Looking to participate in shows---
Post by: Skating Skies on January 30, 2015, 10:47:48 AM
Hi all,
I am looking for shows to participate. Does anybody know where to start? Any good contacts or links will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

At the amateur end many (most?) rinks and clubs run their own shows. Ask around your local clubs and rinks.

At the professional end, which I can't help you with, you have "Disney on Ice" (for which you can apply), televised ice shows, Ice Dance Theater groups (e.g., http://www.thenexticeage.org , http://www.thenexticeage.org ... ), etc. The highest end might be by invitation only - it helps to win a medal at US Nationals or the Olympics. And then there are the Ice Shows at gambling casinos, with a starting point involving minimal attire.

At the semipro level Grassroots to Champions (http://grassrootstochampions.com/) trains people in choreography, and runs competitive shows/contests.

Perhaps you can be more specific?  :)

Thanks so much! I am looking at a cast (group) that is being included into a gala-shows. Unfortunately I don't know of anything like that in US. Might not exist at all. I don't want to touch anything that touches competitive skating. I am not interested in it.

Woohoo, fun!  Are you looking to do pro or just for fun?

When I was 16 I auditioned for the Ice Capades!!  No, I couldn't even keep up with the "pack" and my photos - oy!  But I got to skate in Madison Square Garden and it was soooo exciting!  That's a 16yo for ya'....

There are definitely tryouts for shows at theme parks, Disney on Ice, etc. - I don't know how it works but you might want to start asking around at your rink - your coach may know something.  I have known many skaters of all levels who have gone on the show circuit - it is easier if you are a man and many have competition experience but not all.

It is good if you have some specialty like dance or can do something on the ice that is unique - like my friend who has combined aerial dance with skating on both ice and pick-skates -

On the other hand, some of the local rinks around here have theatre on ice groups that perform... So that may be worth looking into?

I have heard that there is WAY more work in Europe and Asia than here in the US but I do know some skaters that got fun jobs at Theme Parks...

I just googled "auditioning for figure skating shows" and a lot of interesting things came up - including videos of skaters applying for jobs.

You just have to work it and put yourself out there.

Good luck!

Thank you so much! That's a lot of useful info. I am sure I can find something interesting. Disney on ice is not for me. I am not into dancing in ballet dresses (although I did at some point) - I am more into flying under hard rock music in leather outfits. I'll see where the road will take me :) That would be an interesting adventure...

Search at Youtube for "Ice Shows". There are way too many videos to look through, and you'll have to search Yahoo or Bing or Google to find contact info - but there are sure a lot of them.

I have two friends that are on cruise ships now, one that did them for ten years. Also  some start out at Disney but end up In Europe doing shows. I know they take boys without comp experience. They also have done the parks on the east coast  at Christmas time.

Well... I am a girl :) But this is an interesting info. Keep it coming :)
As for cruises: The regular size of the skating ring is not enough for me... I always get disappointed when I get to skate on that. But I guess it will depend on the show, right?

I've recently watched some video clips of John Curry and it looked like he was skating on fairly small places for some of his performances and he delivered some very artistic skating.

Here's one located in Florida. The figure skating side is run by a guy that toured with Disney on Ice. I know a few people that have worked for the company and did the skating show over at Disney for their Frozen attraction.

I know a boy now on Independence of the seas from now to August doing triples on that ice. It works :)
Girls are harder as more competion. Do an audition tape and send it out. You never know!
