Famous Lefties
« on: February 19, 2016, 04:32:47 PM »
I am a leftie. To help me with my visualization, I am watching videos of famous lefties. So far I've got Ashley Wagner, Carolina Kostner, and Alissa Czisny. Who am I missing? TIA!

If you download a video (Firefox browser + "Video Download Helper" or "Youtube Video And Audio Downloader" extension), and use
VLC media player's "Flip Horizontal" video effect to play it,  then you can make EVERYONE a leftie!

And don't forget the "ambidextrous people".  e.g. Rohene Ward.

Yeah, that guy is super human :)

Gracie Gold can do an axel and some doubles the other direction.

Thanks all!  Just remembered that Grant Hochstein is a leftie. Madeline Aaron and Max Settlidge are a leftie pairs team.

Me! All kidding aside (although I am a lefty skater), I found this list:

Don't forget Johnny Weir too!

Denise Biellmann is. John Curry is another example of an ambidextrous spinner. I love love love how he just starts spinning in the other direction.

And if you ever want to make sense of something a high level skater is doing so you can try to copy it, just put up a hand mirror next to your computer screen or phone screen when you watch the video and watch it in the mirror! :)  My coach taught me that trick.

As a clockwise dominant skater, I often watch coaches struggle to demonstrate skills on their weak side.  I would rather they just used their strong side because it is much easier for me to reflect it in my head than it is for the coach to reflect it in real life.

Completely agree. I've been left handed my entire life. I've always just mirrored someone. I get really confused when they try to explain it using the opposite as I always have to double check what they meant. Even when my coach corrects my body positions on jumps, I have to double check that she's used the correct limb as I naturally just switch what she says.

Yes!!!!!  That's why I use terms like skating leg and free leg. At least once a week, I get told to do something "wrong" meaning the coach is referring to the wrong leg or arm.

Yep. Most of the time, I say "Just do it your way and I will flip it."

It would be amusing to see how your coach would respond to watching them teach in the mirror. :)

How about Toller Cranston, Karen Magnussen ( my childhood idols)  Roz Sumners and Carol Heiss. And me.  I am not left handed but I skated left, meaning I land on left leg and rotate clockwise, for non skaters .

And for those who know who I am know that I'm also a CW skater too!!!   ;D :WS:
