Skatingforums Challenges
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:54:28 AM »
Any suggestions for the next skatingforums challenge?

The skatingforums challenge is a regular feature of this site that some have described as being "#gamified" - in fact, if you log in and search for "#gamified" you'll see the challenges that have been issued in the past.  There's no prize or shame involved - just a list of things to accomplish from easy to very difficult with a bonus or two thrown in for fun.

We've just finished a spin challenge and we've done off-ice, jumps, edges, footwork, and spirals/pseudo spirals.  I haven't really done any ice dance because honestly, it just ain't my thing.  I'd be happy to take someone else's suggestions for the four levels, though, and give full credit to the challenger.

I realize that we will not be able to please everyone, so those who cannot participate in a particular challenge can always suggest other ideas or just cheer on others.  (For example, someone was practicing for a Moves test so s/he abstained from our footwork challenge because it was just too much at that time.  They've since joined in other challenges after the test was done.)  I think that's okay and some support for those up for the challenge will not go remiss!

Vote in the poll so I can get a pulse of what interests us right now, then throw out your suggestions in a post or two!

I'm still adjusting to new skates (after 12 years in the wrong size) and I want to JUMP! Haven't found the sweet spot consistently enough to want to spin. . .   88)

I voted turns and edges but I really like all of the challenge ideas.

I think a knee bend or off ice challenge could be cool!

I'd be very interested in an off-ice challenge.  Skating is over for the season here  :'(

Loops, I don't know how far you are from Leuven Belgium, but our rink is open. It is actually the only one in Belgium at the moment. Just a thought.

Love the idea, PhysicsonIce, and it would be fun to meet up, but we're a good 14 hours from B...... :(

I did just learn that public sessions will be starting up again next week (last summer's complete closure was not normal), but they're always when I have both kids, and DD is NOT independent on the ice.  [sigh]  We will be going, but I feel like I can't win that one.

I need an incentive to start working on my back turns (brackets, counters and rockers).

I've been trying to brainstorm a choreography challenge. The only ideas I have so far is starting at easy with just putting together one or two 8-counts of choreography, or even just spending 5-10 minutes skating to whatever music is playing at the rink, all the way to most difficult which would be choreographing a short program. Admittedly, it's a selfish challenge because I've been meaning to get off my butt and try to put together a dramatic program before Peach Classic. If anyone's interested, I could actually put all the levels together.

I'd like a dance orientated challenge but failing that I'd be happy with a turns & edges one. They definitely need work!
