Thermal Compression Wrap
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:54:30 PM »
I suffered a spinal injury at work and am not sure if/when I'll be allowed to return to the ice or ballet. I am back to work albeit gingerly and slowly. Still cannot do any heavy lifting over 20-30 lbs. Can't run or bend much. However, I have been wearing one of those wrap-around your waist and stick it closed with velcro stretchy things. I bought it at a fitness store as an end of line sale item a long time ago but never wore it until now. It really keeps the heat in! I have found it really reduces my pain and helps me, I'm able to do 50% more wrapped than without it. So my question is, does anyone have experience with these wraps and is there any place you can buy this thermal kind? I tossed the box a long time ago but I recall it was specially made to keep the heat in somehow.
Any suggestions?

Well, there's always thermacare. I can't speak for them as I've never used them. I'm more of an 'ice it' girl.

My experience has been that anything made of neoprene really holds the heat in.

I recall seeing some type of neoprene wrap as a weight loss aid. I guess it helps you sweat off the pounds by retaining heat.
I think I have seen ads or infomercials about them in the past 6 months or so, so I presume you could still find them.

The wrap I'm using has no label, just a small pink lower case "e" kind of like the cancer ribbons. It seems to be composed of 1/8" of foam rubber adhered to a elastic stretchy material which the velcro can bite into anywhere. It does not relax with wear, it stays set all day, and is really warm. I tossed the box and no name otherwise I'd just try to find the same thing... :(
I wear it kind of over the upper hip bones and under the navel, as right now my primary area of pain and soreness is in my right hip close to the center, it sort of radiates out from the lower right base of my spine area. sitting in a vehicle really bugs it.

I have a bad hernia after baby #2 (big baby).  This can cause me to have back pain, especially if I have to stand all day.

My back pain is nothing like yours.  I bought a "Squeem".   It helped my back a lot.  It also keeps my midsection warm.  I don't normally wear it alot anymore.  Since I started back skating, my back has grown stronger.  But, my hernia is still there.   The doctor, literally, pushed my inards back inside!  When he did that, I felt his hands go inside my stomach muscles.  I am going to get the hernia fixed, but probably in April or May.

I have nothing on wraps, but I did want to chime in to say sorry!  I hope it gets better quickly so you can be back on the ice/at the barre..... I can sense how much you love both!

Is there anyway once you heal enough to use at least modify the ballet for kind of a physiotherapy?

Good luck.  With the wrap information, too.

Thanks Loops, My problem with scaling back is that I always want to push for more, to drive myself into more extension deeper bends to push and push. I can't do it half way, and I was just really starting to break past some hurdles and see results... :(
Up until 8 days ago I was in pristine shape physically, could do anything.

Where do you find a squeem? I'm assuming it is some sort of compression garment?

Squeems are sold on Amazon and probably other places as well.  The moment I put it on, my spine is much more supported.

Any orthopaedic device should be fitted to the individual.

Talk to a physiotherapist and ask what they recommend. You may find they have some different models that you can trial prior to buying. They will also (hopefully) give you some exercises todo that will return functionality to your back.
Will do almost anything for pizza.
