"Just for me" goals
« on: April 13, 2017, 09:27:37 AM »
A comment from rink staff made me think about this last night. I had a snippet of time at the end of the session where I had the ice to myself, so I did spirals. Big, fat, how much ice can I cover, edge spirals. Long, straight spirals (curling lines are so helpful!)

As we talked about my indulgence, I mentioned that one of my goals is to be able to do a spiral practically  from board to board for the length of the rink. (Am about 3/4 of the way there.) It's not a "need it for a test" goal, or even a "need it for a program" goal. It's just for my own personal pleasure/satisfaction.

Anyone else have "just for me" type goals?

I'll never get it without blowing out both knees, but I'd love to be able to do an outside spreadeagle.

Try the USFSA Intermediate Moves in the Field Spiral Pattern:

Nothing like ruining some perfectly nice spirals by throwing Mohawks in there!

My son can do a forward to backward lunge.  He persuaded me to try and it was kind of fun but I don't position my skate quite right and wipe out.  I'd like to get that down even though it's not a test thing...just a fun thing!

Mohawk and a power shift, too boot!

Never quite mastered the backward lunge and honestly, not interested.  Even with the front-to-back entrance.

One thing that I always try with varying success is several sequential brackets on a line, with a 1 or 2 second pause between each bracket (no rushing).

I can do them about half the time on the right foot, but my left foot is, well,... a left foot.

"The Johnny Weir Slide" is my goal at the moment. They're sooooo much fun, and I can do a semi decent one right now. No one at my rink does them, and I love working on unusual things.

We had to do this in group a couple of weeks ago.

Achievable goal: Twizzles away from the wall or grabbing coach's hand on the way round.

Stretch (may never happen) goal: Paso Doble

I'd like to be able to do double twizzles on both feet, all directions and edges.  Though really I'll settle for forward and back insides on at least one foot, since that's the closest to happening.  (I've got one and a half!)

I'd also like to contort myself enough to do a catchfoot spiral and/or spin.

My coach is doing a skid from a forward to a backward spiral on the same foot in her program.  This is something that seems like it would be nice to know how to do, but the practice (and nasty falls) it would take to get to a state of knowing how to do it is too horrifying to contemplate.

I'd like to get my hydroblade much lower to the ice. It's in my program, but only because I love doing it so much. I really, really want it to be a recognizable thing instead of just an attempt. It's just so much fun.

Last summer one of the adults at my rink was doing a backward lunge and somehow caught her blade in the ice resulting in a fractured ankle. Fortunately it was bones only so she was out of a cast in 6 weeks.

If you do get injured, pray you break bones and not tear ligaments.

Ditto on danger of backward lunge.  A young skater at my rink caught her blade and tore a ligament.  Ended her skating career.

I don't think backwards lunges are all that good looking anyways..... I used to be able to do the forward to backward one, but haven't done them in years.

My goal is a solid outside spread eagle. It's taken be about 6 years to get my hips to open up to where they need to be, and now it's just a little more confidence to hold it on a true outside edge rather than awkward flats. But the dudes I skate with at my rink are impressed and excited because soon I'll be able to do them around the ice with them lol.

I also want to get a low hydroblade. I figure I'm not jumping anymore, so I want to pad my skills with things that you don't normally see adult skaters do. :) And at 29, I still feel I'm young enough to accomplish that.

I've seen a Norwegian skater in her fifties do a hydroblade. At 29 you're still young. At 65 I'd have to have 3 knee surgeries.

Any spin would work, but I dream of a layback. Just for me, not for competition or testing. I think they are the most beautiful spin, especially when the raised hand is perfectly centered and doesn't move.

My goal is a solid outside spread eagle.
Me too. My main reason was that I always thought it looked like the most terrifying and awesome thing in skating, scarier than any jumps or spins. So I figured if I could get over that I could do the same with other things.

I'm getting there with them now and I realize they're not scary at all :). But I still want a good one because they look so impressive.

With each new freeskate program I do (i.e., every other year) I try to add some little connecting move that I have just mastered.  In my last program, it was a RBO figure loop.  In my current program, it's a LBI figure loop and a LFI counter.  In my next program, I hope to add twizzles.  Good thing I have until next year for that because I suck at twizzles, LOL!
