Nicknames for Figure Skaters
« on: May 22, 2014, 11:09:25 AM »
I had a short, fun discussion with a volleyball coach about names and nicknames for athletes.  It got me thinking that the sports writers typically assign athletes their nicknames, if they don't come up to the majors with one already in place.  Mookie Wilson is my favorite.  (His momma didn't name him "Mookie."  His given name is "William.")

Plus, I used the verb "chacked" twice in the last two days.  (Look up Michael Chack on Wikipedia if you want the short-and-sweet explanation.)

I know that some skaters have nicknames that fans have given them; Michelle Kwan is "The Kween."  Daisuke Takahashi is "Dice."  Patrick Chan's last name is used and abused regularly, depending on the situation and scoring.  But, those aren't as cool as "Shoeless Joe" or "Eddie the Eagle."

Think about some ordinary skater you know (or yourself) and make up a really good nickname.
"If you still look good after skating practice, you didn't work hard enough."

I've always wanted an occasion to call a figure skating blog or interest group "Masters of Angular Momentum".
"Any day now" turned out to be November 14, 2014.

My coach informed me that one of her (kid) skaters called me "Cow Lady". Not because of my skating or shape, but because I have spots. Also known as freckles. I was highly amused.  :o I guess it's better than "old slow lady that always gets in my way".

Angela Wang is known as Jelly; Damon Allen frequently refers to her and Joshua Farris as the Josh and Jelly Show.
"Three months in figure skating is nothing. Three months is like 5 minutes in a day. 5 minutes in 24 hours - that's how long you've been working on this. And that's not long at all. You are 1000% better than you were 5 minutes ago." -- My coach

Can we share? Or should I be "Old slow cow lady that always gets in my way"?

I'm 5'2". You can be "Taller old slow lady who gets in my way", and I'll be "Adorable old slow lady who gets in my way."

OMG! 5'4" You tower over me!  I'm the second shortest person at work. The other (a woman) and I are noted for being 'killer chihuahuas' because if you cross us, we'll take you out--at the ankles.

Hmmm, as all the the slow and 5'4" names are taken, I expect I'll have to be "Perpetual Beginner".  ;D
