I just came across this article about core training. all those planks for nothing.... ;-)

Meh.. they may not build functional core strength, HOWEVER, I firmly believe that they do improve body awareness and *that* can offer an improvement in balance.

I agree about the balance and body awareness. For the longest time planks and balls were the mantra of functional core strength, though!

I find planks useful, especially the side planks with the dip.

I don't agree with that -- the Boat pose of Ashtanga yoga definitely works the core, and improves balance as well. It looks easy but is really difficult.
