Title: You know you skate too much when...
Post by: AgnesNitt on June 13, 2011, 06:04:18 PM
Someone emails you about the 'ice dance competition in PL' and you automagically read "Lake Placid" despite the fact that it's initials and they're in the wrong order.

-You choreograph a programme to every song you hear
-When driving home from the rink after practice you think 'I want to skate again'
-Going in the pool consists of doing jumps in waist high water and practicing move sequences
-You have a perpetual bruise underneath your knee from falling on it so much
-Glitter and sparkly things are your best friends
-Your skating friends know more about you then your own parents, siblings, best friend
-You shake your head and walk away when anyone says that 'Ice Princess' is a good skating movie...but yet you secretly like to watch it.
-You check skatingforums more than your facebook
-Mysterious bruises appear on your legs and arms from those 'minor falls' that you didn't think hurt at the time
-You name your pets 'Axel', 'Lutz', 'Blade', etc
-You cringe when you see people using rental skates
-You broke in the rental skates when you didn't have your own
-You have more coordination on ice, than you do off ice.

*That was fun, I may have more later*

You only watch movies for the music to see if it is program worthy.
You want everyone to know the reason you limp is from skating practice.
You listen to your program music in the car on repeat so you can mentally do the program.
You own 9542688542 pair of gloves and all have holes and none match.
You feel the need to put rhinestones on everything.
You're broke because you had to buy ice time and lessons.
You schedule everything around skating, including vacations.

You practice spirals in the extra large handicap bathroom stall at work.

You practice step behinds in the grocery line (this is not just me!)  :-[

You read Runner's World for exercises to improve your knees and ankle strength.  :angel

You take a dead boring yoga class because it will give you open hips.  88)

- you get corns on the ball of your feet - exactly where the blade is aligned
- your back is sore all the time, except when you're on the ice
- when you go shopping for clothes, the first thought is "can I skate in that??"
- you have more friends from the rink than outslde

i would go on, but wait a minute, there is no such thing as skating too much!

I totally have lacing callouses. But they aren't as bad now as they were when my sisters were too young to lace their own skates. I used to run an assembly line lacing skates for myself and my two younger sisters.

Add all the spread eagle exercises while waiting in line.
Oh and visible calluses on both ankles right under the tongue of skates.

Oh crud, this is me down to the ground...

- All your favourite videos on Youtube are your favourite programs
- the first item in the budget for the fortnight is "ice time" followed by "coach's fees"
- the first thing you ever bought online was a pair of skating tights
- you want to go to Russia because Russia is where the best male skaters all come from!
- the fact that you bleed from a fall is a new exciting thing to be catalogued into new skating experiences
- any time you find a surface that's remotely low in friction you start spinning (DO NOT DO THIS WHEN DRUNK!  :angel)
- you despise short skirts and short shorts and think they're trashy...except as a skating practice/competition outfit!

- You go and run all your errands in your sweaty skating clothes and don't realize until around 2pm that you're still in skating clothes.

I did that one day recently. I had to find interview pants and a dress for a wedding and so I went right after practice and didn't get home until 3... so I was in my sweaty clothes until 4 pm when I could finally shower.  Yuck.

The calluses on the sides of your pinky fingers finally crack and bleed, staining your skate laces.  You quickly cover them with the bandaids you always carry in your skate bag, so as not to get blood on your files at work later that morning.
You keep a fan at the office just to dry out your skates after morning ice.  Oh, and air freshener.  And there's a designated place in your office for your Transpack.
You eat your lunch at 2PM so you can practice jumps and spiral positions in the office kitchen while your food microwaves without risking bumping into others, both literally and figuratively.
You quietly take quick "stretching breaks" in a secluded storage room.
You wish your colleagues wouldn't ask "why the limp?" because you don't want another lecture about "skating at your age."
Your orthopedist knows you and greets you by name upon sight.  His assistant, too.  He forgets which parts he's already treated, and so do you, so numerous are they.
You cut your own music, and your coach never worries it may not be "family-friendly" or the wrong length.
The newbie skater kids at the rink ask if you're a coach.  They want your instruction even after you respond "no."
The first time skaters at public ask if you're a professional, God love 'em, even though we know it's only because the really good skaters with doubles don't ever come to publics.
When you pass parents and skaters coming to the rink after work in - work clothes! - no one recognizes you.  Similarly, you've skated in slacks or a dress blouse at least once, cuz you forgot to pack skate attire and you refuse to miss a session.
You see your skates as a long-term investment.  In fact you may take such good care of them you don't get any of the usual visual cues of breakdown until it's too late.  Which leads me to...
...you suddenly have spare time to participate in forums, 'cuz you injured yourself yet again and are off the ice OR ELSE!

Definitely me, that one.

When not being on ice between Monday of one week and Monday of the next drives you so completely bonkers your parents are on the verge of kicking you out.  ;D

When you plan your next lunch with Grandma with enough time to start work sewing that skating skirt project (sorry Grandma )

When your parents offer to pay ice time for a month for your birthday, and you hesitate because - do you take the ice time or do you ask for ballet (to improve your skating) instead? And you can't think of a single birthday present idea that isn't skating related.

You get to the rink and realize your skate card isn't in your bag, so they give you a pass anyway because they know you'll come back with the card as soon as you find it. (Yes I did find it, and yes I did go back to get it chipped)

You go shopping for clothes (shorts - all of mine have holes in the back pockets and I'm not sure why) and get distracted by all the stuff on clearance right now that would be *perfect* for skating.

I have to remind myself I have plenty of skating clothes - it's regular clothes that are lacking!

It's so nice to know other skaters sweat. I'm the only one I ever see at my rink who's sweating. Sometimes, I sweat so much, steam rises from my head.

-It feels just like a holiday gift when you find out that you have your favorite LTS group(for me it's the youngest 3-4 yr olds)
-You've mastered doing spiral in an elevator..both directions(up and down I mean)
-You watch "Dance Moms' and think 'yea I know a skating parent like that' or 'Abby Lee Miller is nothing compared to the coaches I've seen.' (That's actually very true for me;)
-You can't listen to a classical/instrumental piece without thinking 'oh <insert skater's name> skated to this.'
-Rinestone yoga pants are added to the 'new best friend' list.
-You adore the instrument/sound track music station
-You've walked on the ice with your guards on at least once
-You have a mixture of rather embarressing music on your ipod..including showtunes, disney tracks, movie soundtracks, etc
-You've considered sleeping at the rink, so that you'll be sure to catch early morning freestyle
-Falling doesn't faze you anymore.
-Mispronouncation of your name at competitions and test sessions doesn't faze you anymore(I've given up)
-One word 'toepick'
-You've cut your hand on your blade at least once(most recently, wiping my blades off and buffing them with the side of my finger)
-Skating in jeans...not gonna happen.

Okay I'm done..gotta go do some off ice:)

- You have more kids from the rink on your facebook than adults
- You spend your lunchtime looking at IJS scores and what the codes mean
- You've walked to the rink in the pouring rain and skated soaked to the skin more than once
- You get adopted by skate moms
- Your annual leave from work is only ever used for skating tests, competitions, practice before tests/competitions, skate camps. My personal favourite was two half days to go and try on and then go and buy skates
- You have your new blades delivered to the office and insist on showing them to everyone
- You've had people think your soakers are part of your skate (considering I have huge fluffy soakers, not really sure why anyone would be this stupid, but my manager was!)
- When people annoy you, you threaten them with your toepicks
- You no longer panic when the kids fall on their doubles
- You ignore all medical advice and skate on injuries

I'm an adult male figure skater. I do a lot of "manly" activities like surfing, mountain biking and week-long backpacking trips in remote wilderness areas. And recently I started taking Ballet because I thought it might help my skating. That's when I knew I was totally addicted!!!! I have the pinky callouses too and take week-long skating "vacations"... but before I took up skating I never in a million years imagined I'd ever find myself in a Ballet class. I grew to kinda like it too. I have a ton of respect for dancers now. Some of what they do is simply amazing.

I hear you about the callouses. The general reaction from nail technicians: "What lovely hands!" *starts on pedicure* "..."

Recurring bruises... oh boy...

-You're on a date and all you talk about is landing that jump.
-You laugh at muscle heads who think one footed squats are unnecessary torture. (how else will we train for that sit spin?)
-You crave the ice even though you're sore.
-To motivate yourself at the gym, you chant "AXEL JUMP"

I was on vacation this passed week and thought of a few more:

-When watching an ice show, you're the only one that claps at the impossibly hard footwork
-There's an ice rink in the condo complex that you vacation at every year
-You crush on a skater not just because he's cute, but because of his gravity defying jumps and fantastic skating ability. (*sigh*)
-You had to explain to your non skating dad that double jumps and toe picks equals deep holes...and why it's courteous to cover them up
-When the worker at the condo complex(with the ice rink), knows your name. I only stayed there for a week.
-You've broken and/or lost so many toenails that it doesn't even phase you anymore.

Your kids ask if you can have a backyard ice rink this winter and you desperately want it to be possible.

You're on a road trip and pass a house with a pretty little pond and all you think is "I hope they skate on it in winter."

I always wanted to turn my parents yard into a rink.  They just didn't understand!

And they were looking at a vacation house once in CT, with a pond on the property and I tried as hard as I could....

But they did have a different vacation house in CT before that and we did have skating on the pond in winter!!  It was the best.

I once lived in a building in Manhattan specifically because it had an outdoor rink in winter!

The low D, at least, predates skating… I knew about it a few years ago but was switching doctors and never followed up.  New doc gave me an earful about that last month when she found out I knew but hadn't even bothered with regular multivitamins.

Well, bummer.  But maybe the placebo effect will kick in and I'll be doing axels soon!   ;D

Taking b12 sometimes makes me feel less tired... Which means I will be more inclined to move. Lol. Both to get up and go to the rink and actually be more active when I'm there. So in that respect it very well could help!

The vitamin D deficiency can take a while to resolve. The change is so gradual that you just don't notice until 6 months later you are less tired, grumpy and reactive.

B12 deficiency is a quicker fix, under a month, but you need to take them always. Some people find daily pills are not enough so need it injected regularly instead.

Hoping every one improves soon.  :)

The good thing about Vitamin D is you have to try really hard with astronomical doses to OD on it.
I had Mono and D deficiency....I think a wet dishrag had more energy. It was TERRIBLE.
(cure for D deficiency: 10.000 units a day for a week, then once a week for 3 month...)

to easy to take to feel exhausted!

Oh wow… that's an unfun combination.

Yeah, I'm on 50,000 units 2x/week for 8 weeks, then 2000 daily for 4, then we recheck.  Got a B12 injection to get things going, now daily tablets, and we'll recheck that in 12 weeks too.  Sounds like I might start to notice effects right around the time I also step down from a major job responsibility.  Really looking forward to summer!

When all of your regular clothes are from a thrift store, but the skating clothes are purchased brand new.

When, while shopping for these new skating clothes, you leave the store after a couple hours searching, frustrated that they don't have any long-sleeve shirts that fit snugly enough.

When you do this at several stores in a row.

When you want your skates to be dry as quickly as possible, so you tote them into work after morning sessions to put them on a boot dryer under your desk.  Even when this means lugging a heavy skate bag in addition to your lunch and laptop up five flights of stairs, skipping every other step, because you're convinced that doing this will help you jump better so you've boycotted the elevator.

When your spouse in the morning tells you they had a dream about you skating and in it, you jumped so high you hit the roof at the rink.

...your other hobbies service skating.

Examples: I like woodworking and music - and I've made my own upper-end loudspeakers to audition classical music selections for programs. My music selection is over 1500 CDs, and the vast majority are classical. When playing a disc, I try to imagine a program to the music. If I really like a skater's music on TV, I will soon have the CD (Jeremy Abbot - "Pina", Johnny Weir - Sibelius' Valse Triste, etc.)

Another woodworking example: I've made skate drying racks for my own needs, and about a dozen more to sell to other skaters.

More: My job is photo centric, so whenever I teach, I sometimes use skating related pictures as examples in class.
(Want proof?: There's a photo of me teaching in our lab with the student computers all showing a skater doing a spiral. It's hosted on the school's web site - http://www.ohio.edu/viscom/ (http://www.ohio.edu/viscom/) if you are curious.)

Someone-has-to-do-it department: Test a new photo printer for the school? - dig out some favorite skating pictures and make big prints!

...or your snowboots  :-[  But really, they're more comfortable that way! ;)

You lace your hiking boots the same way you lace your skates

Caught myself pulling up my shoe laces like I do the skate laces  88). Also - took Miss 14 to get hiking boots for a school camp week in the bush. She did the same thing. The salesman said it was good that she did her boots up nice and firm, then asked where she'd hiked before. Miss 14 had to explain that she ice-skated... and had never hiked before.

Had to resurrect this one. We had several days of frigid temps, then one day of rain, followed by frigid temps again. Because of that there's a small patch of ice in the spot next to my driveway that always floods. It's about 12 feet x 2 feet. I looked at it this morning and pondered whether it was wide enough for me to at least practice turns or something. I decided it isn't, but also that if it were in my backyard rather than the front, I would probably try anyway. :-)

Awesome Twinskaters.  When I was a kid growing up, occasionally we'd get ice storms.  Your story reminds me of two times the streets froze with at least an inch of ice (safe enough to not kill blades).  I remember the first time, I worked on my figures in the street, and the second time I did a bit of freestyle in a relatively new Kiss-n-Ride parking lot for the local bus system.  Both times it was fantastic, never had any audience.   In light of that I vote you damn the torpedoes and just do it!  In your shoes, I'd also get my hose ready to you know, help the puddle along....

No kidding... I bought my car 8 months ago, with only 10 miles on it.  I'm at 16500 already!  I don't think I'll be hitting 30k this year, but 20k is a real possibility!

A.  You run out of space in your skate bag (Transpack Ice) for all your gear.
B.  The solution is to dig into the closet for the bigger bag (full size Transpack) that you bought by mistake a couple of years ago and never bothered to return, (because hey, you never know…).

You find yourself doing spirals in a store's dressing room as you try on a thin sweater that might be perfect for a showskate costume.  Had to see how it would look in various positions, and needed to determine which size would work best so that it wouldn't be constricting.

Taking b12 sometimes makes me feel less tired... Which means I will be more inclined to move. Lol. Both to get up and go to the rink and actually be more active when I'm there. So in that respect it very well could help!

I discovered B12 is like legal Speed. My mother had a B12 deficiency, and I had some of the same symptoms, so I started taking it. The first couple of weeks was amazing. Then it just becomes the new normal.

I've done ~12 weeks of daily supplements of B12 and D now; got blood levels rechecked and they're good, so I'm supposed to keep doing it. Not really noticing much of a difference in energy level or anything, unfortunately.  Oh well.

When you can identify what movie your parents are watching in the loungeroom - with absolutely no visibility from your position - solely by the score.

(Overhear mum and dad saying, "what's the name of this movie, I can't remember" and me just "Man in the Iron Mask.". Parents were  ??? )

When you have more scores on your iPod than actual songs because scores are great skating music.

When you spend a whole movie going "wow, great score! Someone could totally skate to this!"

When you return to the rink on Friday night to watch your son's mite hockey game.  You have to sit on the bleachers, and they are C-O-L-D and the rink smells.   Then, you realize that you are never cold or notice the rink's smell when you are skating.    Then, it's a whole, blissful experience.

When one of the coaches working in your rink approach and tell you: "you're here everyday" (implying "do you even have a life outside?")
When you're alone in an elevator with a mirror and try to do a (failed) wall split, dreaming that one day, this would turn into a beautiful spiral or biellmann position on ice ...

We are mainly a hockey rink, and it smells all the time.  But, I don't really notice it when I am figure skating . . . .

You know you skate too much when you are playing tennis on Sunday morning with your son and you decide this is a good place to do off-ice while he 's running for the ball and that the tennis racket would make good "bands" for shoulder alignment.    So, you do flip and lutz jumps, holding a tennis racket horizontally, and you perfectly land each one on one leg, fully rotated!

Here's one I learned today.  You know you skate too much when you get to the rink at 9am, warm up for 30 minutes off ice, skate for 2 hours, take a 30 minute break, and then have your lesson at Noon and you discover all of the awesome stuff you did that morning you can't do in front of your coach because you're pooped!

I've had the double loop dream many times - including during years when I wasn't even skating!  It always feels extra floaty - doesn't feel like a double so much as a single that takes twice as long!

Yeah, and my imaginary "skating/singing" in the car song is always something that's too fast or advanced for my present ability or is something that would totally not be appropriate for a 46 year old bronze broad.   Something like Thunderstruck by AC/DC or, a softer side, "River Deep, Mountain High" by Tina Turner or Celine Dion and a crazy song, "Thunder" by Prince, or a classic Ambrosia song, "You're the only woman."     Now, you all should be laughing. :P

LOL, Sultans Of Swing.  Neat little song!   I'd pay money to see a great skater work with that one.

Walk Of Life, oh wow that IS a fast one.   1920's Charleston steps work with it pretty well, but that's WAY beyond my pay grade on skates.   My mind immediately made the obvious leap to Bruce Springsteen's Glory Days.   Which is way slower, but still high energy.  Would LOVE to social pairs dance to that when I'm no longer a hazard on ice.    (I challenge you not to do a hand-in-the-air jump at the 2:03 "Woop!".)

I recently got this album, and on hearing this sweet little song:

http://gregjohnson.bandcamp.com/track/dont-be-the-one-4

... I immediately thought "Dutch Waltz!" (or in fact any of the 6/8 waltzes).   In fact I think I'll take it to the rink today if it's not too busy.

These two others grabbed me as ice dancing fodder too, but I haven't figured out what dances they'd suit:

http://gregjohnson.bandcamp.com/track/horses-3

One day, one day...

IT's harder to replace your skates than a car. I've bought a car in 45 mins. Skates, I have to get measured, then wait 3 months, then pick them up with new blades, then spend 3-4 week breaking them in.

I am more upset about having to replace my skates that were in my car that was just stolen than I am about having to replace my car.

Oh no, that's awful!  I do know what you mean.  My skates are worth more than my current vehicle, and would take months to replace.  It's a skater's nightmare to get their skates stolen!

Well that s****. Cops have any leads yet?

No leads. I figure it went straight to a chop-shop. I mean, who steals a 19 year old car except for parts. I was in a parking lot full of nice BMWs and Mercedes but all of them have chip immobilizers now so mine was easy pickings I guess. Still mighty brazen to steal a car in the middle of the afternoon from the employee parking lot at city hall. Unfortunately no cameras in the lot.

Awful!

My skates are worth more than my car too.

you practice in a dress and tights (a rarity for me) and realize on the way home from the rink that you need something from Home Depot... and honestly consider running in "just for a minute" in said dress.  (For the record, I didn't, but it was really, really hard not to do it.)

Filled the car with fuel once in my bright green skating skirt and a tank top.

In my defence, I'd just come out of practice and it was 35C.

That sucks big :(

Worst part is they've either chop-shopped it as you say, or they've flogged the guts out of it then set it on fire somewhere. Either way your skates are probably in a bin somewhere or burned into a melted puddle.

I used to do this regularly.
It was when I went for dinner in skating dress, with office trouser over the top (to be fair it was next door to the rink) and a strange woman came up to me and asked me if my 4 year old had dressed me. It did make me think twice about doing it again (although I put her down as very rude cos who comments to a perfect stranger on what they're wearing?!).

It didn't stop me driving in skating skirts. That stopped after I was involved in a major car accident and was stuck with police, fire and ambulance crews. I was there apologising for my dress, saying I didn't always go out like that. The policeman was like, it's OK madam, we've seen it all before...

LOL, great stories!

I simply wouldn't feel comfortable skating in any clothes that I wouldn't be happy to be generally seen out in public in.   Skating is "out in public" too as far as I'm concerned.

You take a shower both before and after you skate, because you have to feel beautiful on the ice.  (And, you can't be beautiful if you sweated in the summer heat).

Haha!  I keep wanting to put a skirt over my skate pants but I don't have the nerve yet.... maybe when I skate a bit better.

Post-competition tonight, mom and I went to dinner (we didn't leave the rink until 9), and I had forgotten to bring the change of clothes (still conveniently on the bed at home), so skating dress, tights, and hot pink running shoes it was.  Hunger won over potential shame.

You count the hours you skate so you can schedule your next sharpening.

You regard youTube and Wikipedia as basically figure skating sites that the rest of the world is allowed to use for less important reasons.

You know you skate too much when 95% of the Pokemon you've caught have been at the rink.

You know you skate just the right amount, when you spend so much time skating that you don't have time to even have a look at the lastest pop trends.  ::>)

You know you skate too much when you spot a dime on the floor by the bench and your first thought is not "I'm rich!" but rather "I'd better move that before someone trashes their blade on it."

Yeah, the beginning of the new year is a good trigger to reflect on this topic.

You know you skate too much when you are a male in his 60's and

(a) You read a forum thread on "Keeping warm in a skirt", and you think, "That's an intriguing thermal transfer problem."

(b) You read a forum thread on "Skating while being well endowed in the chest", and you think, "How does a substantially axially-asymmetric load distribution affect a forward scratch spin?"

(c) Some of your most supportive, comforting, and endearing friends are 7 - 14 yr old girls.

You know you skate too much when your new sharpener is worried about your opinion because he thinks you know what a 'good' sharpening should be like and he's afraid to disappoint you. (He was better than fine, he was great)

You know you skate too much when a friend calls out "Hey, you couldn't do that last year!" to some little thingy you did on ice.

You're real lucky.  In my area, the supply/demand ratio for good sharpeners is highly biased in favor of the good sharpeners.  As a consequence, most develop diva complexes (or whatever the proper male equivalent is) and get ticked off to varying degrees if what you want is different from what they give you.

My rink has a glut of decent sharpeners: one coach's mom, one male coach, and one male ice dancer. The male ice dancer does it as a service to the community and charges low. I can't judge the other sharpeners, but my old sharpener is USFSA choice for comps, worlds and the Olympics. However, it was 5 hours out of my day to get my blades sharpened. I just don't have that time anymore. The  new guy is just as good and picks up/delivers to the rink at the next day.

You know you skate too much when your coach asks if you want to do additional off-ice class work with the expectation that you'll say yes ... because you always do.

(The only reason I didn't is that due to hockey, off-ice was moved to before LTS, the one kid that has just started coming to off-ice but not LTS didn't know so Coach was staying for her, and I honestly couldn't handle another minute of the giant electronic spin trainer of doom today. That, and I was starving.)

When you go on a weekend getaway and you can coordinate your ear bands to your outfits... and when you don't worry about losing a glove in a taxi because you have at least three more pairs in your skate bag at the hotel. My collection of winter accessories is almost embarrassing.
