Test grandfathering chart for returning adult skaters
« on: August 02, 2017, 11:38:20 AM »
A NEW resource for skaters returning to the sport - Check out the official "Moves in the Field and Free Skate Grandfathering Chart For Figures Tests and Tests Passed Prior to Moves in the Field Prerequisites"!
http://www.usfigureskating.org/content/Test%20Grandfathering%20Chart.pdf

This chart is posted on the Adult Skating Program page of U.S. Figure Skating under "Test Opportunities for Advanced Skaters and Those Returning to the Sport". It's also on the About Us, Forms page under "Competitions" and also under "Tests".

Oooo-great find!  (Note that it's for TESTING, not for competitions.  That's a whole other ball of wax.)

Well that is COOL!

I see that my 1st figure test puts me at Pre-Juv level - but not sure what level it would put me in at adult?

I also think there should be a similar chart for dance - there used to be a rule written in the rule-book that if you had passed a certain level of dance before a certain date you could be grandfathered in at that level in Moves - the rule is not in the actual rulebook but I have known some high-level adult dancers to start (and pass) their moves at Jr because of this grandfathering business.

It is something to wrap your head around for sure - and also I know I could NEVER compete at Pre-Juv!  LOLOLOLOL

This should answer the other questions:  http://www.usfsa.org/content/2016-2017%20Adult%20Singles%20Eligibility%20Chart%20V1%2007-07-16.pdf

Pre-Juvenile qualifies you to compete at Adult Silver.

BUT according to this chart you've linked Doubletoe I would have to take FS tests to compete in FS at all!

Good thing I'm not a freestyle skater because this would really piss me off if I had to take FS tests!!

Back in the day you didn't do FS tests until Novice and then it was linked with the figures - so 6th figure test was Novice and you had to do the figures (and pass) and then do the FS.  If you subsequently failed the FS you had to do the whole thing over - it was really hard and a HUGE accomplishment to get through your Senior Tests!!

Note that the very first link I posted (the new chart) supersedes the one I posted later.  According to the new chart, if you passed your 1st figure test prior to 1977 it would be considered the same as having passed the Pre-Juvenile FS test, which qualifies you to compete at Adult Silver without having to take any other tests.  If you *did* want to take the next test in the series, it would be Adult Gold MIF or Juvenile MIF, your choice.  After passing one of those, you could take the Adult Gold FS test.
P.S. USFS wouldn't let you compete in Pre-Juvenile if you tried. . . not if you're old enough to have even *existed* in 1977, LOL!

Yesterday I was talking to a woman at the rink that was rather tentative on the ice. She is currently in Adult 1, but skated/competed as a kid and teenager.
She started skating again because her grand daughter is in Basic Skills and privates. It has been over 40 years since she was last on the ice.

She has seen the grandfathering chart and said she has passed 3rd Figure which would put her at Intermediate. She laughed at the idea of skating Intermediate.

Is she "stuck" with having to compete at Intermediate if she did wish to start competing again?

Aside: She has some low level Jackson boots for now, but is looking to move up. She said she had $1500 custom Sp Teri boots but her daughter had thrown them out when because she never used them.
But I wonder at the condition of 40+ year old boots, plus the boots she used at the Intermediate level probably aren't the best to go back into Adult 1 with.

Fortunately, there are plenty of adult skaters in the same boat, especially in the higher age classes.  50-year old Intermediate level skaters are not doing the same jumps and spins as the Intermediate level kids.  I'd recommend setting her sights on a showcase type program, since it's only 1:40 and there aren't any minimum technical requirements for the program content.  The program would fall under one of two categories:  Light Entertainment or Dramatic.

With regard to the 40-year old boots - they may have been in okay shape!  I can tell you that I wish I had boots like my old boots from 30 years ago (also SP Teri) because they do NOT make boots like that anymore!!

The leather might be okay, but I'd be concerned about the lining. And would want to check under the blades to see the condition of the soles.

I've got a custom saddle from the 1920's. The leather is fine, but the stuffing has to be replaced every 20 years or so.
Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/
