SoBe Ice Arena/Fiesta Rancho - Las Vegas, NV
« on: June 07, 2016, 11:26:10 AM »
I had the privilege of attending the US Open Professional Skating Championships last week at the SoBe Ice Arena (aka: Fiesta Rancho) - what an incredible event!

Single sheet of ice.  Zamboni in the far corner has to make a turn to get into/out of the garage.  (It was fun to watch the maneuvers.)

*someone* built a reviewing stand for the judges, which made it so much more fun because you could see their expressions and gestures.  Much better than just using the hockey box.  Kudos to the construction crew.

The bathrooms were clean (always a selling point for me) despite the overflow crowd.
Decent-sized parking lot at no charge.

There is a good amount of upper-deck stadium bench seating across the ice from the hockey boxes.
I don't know if it's handicap-accessible; we walked up the stairs to find seats.
Locker rooms are underneath - didn't check them out at all.

They have a arcade and party room.

Didn't see a harness line but I was focused on the skating, not the facility.

Looks like they have early-morning freestyles during the week as well as on Sat and Sun.
They offer group lessons as well as an edge class.

I revisited this rink last weekend and it was pretty much the same.  The ladies room needed a good cleaning, but there was a huge hockey event going on here and at another rink in the area, so they were probably understaffed.

One note: the casino allows smoking, so the entryway reeks.  The rink, not so much, thanks to the ventilation system.

I observed a LTS session on a Saturday.  Most of the instructors were high school/college age and the classes appeared to be mixed levels.  In one corner, there were four students, all working on different elements.  Maybe registrations were low and they had to combine classes.  (Better than not offering Basic 6 due to low enrollment, imo.)
