2016 and 2017 Adult Sectionals and Adult Nationals (U.S.)
« on: June 08, 2015, 08:27:58 PM »
Press release from U.S. Figure Skating with locations for Sectionals and Adult Nationals for 2016 and 2017.  It's really nice to have 2 years of info.

http://www.usfigureskating.org/Story.asp?id=51199&type=media

I tried to copy/paste the info but the formatting fell apart.

Thank you for posting this.  I'm still waiting to see about Easterns.... TBD????  Really?  What?  No one placed a bid?

Yes 2017 Easterns in my backyard too!  I don't compete, but this makes me think I should at least try since it's so close...

And hosted by the club that will probably be my club if I ever get around to joining one.  (At one of their other rinks, not my home rink.)  Do they have Basic Skills level events at the Adult Sectionals, or just Pre-Bronze and above?  At least I'll get to watch!

Looking at the 2015 Easterns site:

http://2015adulteasternsectionals.pittsburghfsc.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/2015-NQ-Eastern-Adult-Sect.-Champ.-Announcement_12.18.14.pdf

they had a number of events below Pre-Bronze: No Test freeskate, as well as Adult Beginner Jumps, Spins, and Compulsory Moves events.

Hey, cool.  I just looked at that and I can actually do some of the beginner skills they list.  Badly, but hey, I've got nearly two years to improve! And it's the final weekend of my spring break, too.  OK, now I have Goals.

I'm just curious - why have an "Adult National" competition that includes beginner level skills? Surely only local skaters would attend at that level?

Never having attended an adult competition, I will still try to answer as I think believe there is a difference between "qualifying" (in sectionals) or "championship" (in nationals), and non-qualifying (any level below Adult Gold including beginner.)

Ah - I see perhaps I've misunderstood the question.  My thought is that non-qualifying level skaters (like me), including beginners, might be willing to travel to experience the camaraderie of other adult skaters whatever the level, and be inspired by the advanced skaters?

Adult Nationals has testing requirements, and no beginner events are offered. The lowest level offered in Freeskate is Bronze, Bronze in solo dance, Pre-Bronze in partnered dance (but must have passed at least the full pre-bronze test, I believe), and Bronze pairs.

What is being discussed is Adult Sectionals. The true "Adult Sectional" competition is only the qualifying events - i.e., the Championship Silver, Gold, Int/Nov, Sr., and dance and pairs events.

Each Sectional generally hosts a non-qualifying competition simultaneously, which usually uses the same name. That is where the beginner and open events are offered.

Generally, people even at a lower level (or those at higher levels that do not compete championship) attend because going to an all-adult competition is truly a unique experience, very different than even local competitions that have adult events. You have people come in from all over for those events for many reasons, and often one of those reasons is it's the only competition they may have someone to compete against. You meet many new people, it is a goal to work towards throughout the year, and it allows you to showcase your skills while having fun. The same is true of those who only compete open events at Adult Nationals.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but do you have to compete / qualify at Sectionals to compete at Adult Nationals?

Only if you are doing a championship event. Top 4 from Sectionals in Championship events qualify for ANs. All of the rest of the events are open events that anyone can sign up for, which are divided by age group.

Feel kind of silly quoting myself, but I signed up for Bronze MITF today. Test day is Aug. 22.  Yikes!

I'm curious about the non-Test and Showcase events - non test and beginner (no I am not planning to compete) - I don't see anything in this particular Eastern Sectionals announcement that indicates that there are any no-test events - can someone point me to that?

Those types of events are determined by the LOC of the event I think - and IF they have time and IF they want to they can be included but I would not count on it.  Unless I am wrong of course.

I don't see anything specifically "No Test" level either. But as a side note - I don't believe you have to have passed any tests to compete Pre-Bronze.  You MAY have passed Pre-Bronze, but it doesn't seem to be required.  From the rulebook:

4600 Adult Pre-Bronze Singles
A. Test qualifications as of the closing date for entries: Passed no higher than the adult pre-bronze free skate test, or the pre-preliminary free skate test.
