Commissioned by U.S. Figure Skating, the film RISE will celebrate American figure skating while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that perished in a plane crash on its way to the World Championships in Prague. Produced and directed by 16-time Emmy Award winners Lookalike Productions, RISE will document the sports’ growth in popularity over the years and feature various luminaries of American figure skating. Proceeds from RISE will be used to further the mission of U.S. Figure Skating’s Memorial Fund, which was established on Feb. 23, 1961, as a living legacy of those who lost their lives. The film is scheduled to premiere February 17, 2011 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.
Brian gives a playful high five to Scott’s former self in skating solidarity.
Only one upstate theater in Delaware (close to the PA border at that); none on the lower shore at all. :'( wonder if it will be on Netflix?

Thursday night's exhibit ceremony was the first of four things U.S. Figure Skating is doing in commemoration.
Next Tuesday morning there will be a wreath ceremony at 9:30 at the skate bench on the Broadmoor grounds. The bench has the names of the eight Broadmoor members killed.
Next Thursday will be the nationwide showing of the film RISE, which will honor the victims and tell the story of the rebirth of American figure skating in its wake. The film starts at 6:00 pm (MT), and will be shown at both Cinemark locations and the Hollywood Theatres in Colorado Springs. To reserve tickets, call the theatres or go online to www.rise1961.com.
Then next Saturday there will be a Colorado Springs reception and fund-raiser for the Memorial Fund. For information on that, contact U.S. Figure Skating at 719-635-5200.
From what I understand, there's a PRE-SHOW so plan to get to the theater early.
And I can't use the "sorry I can't scorekeep the hockey games, I'm going to see a figure skating movie" excuse because they'd all just laugh in my face. I hope they release it on DVD or something.I'm not accepting this as an excuse for you to miss the event! If you had theater tickets, you'd take the night off. Why is it any less important to miss a one-time event just because it's figureskating related? If it were an event about the 1982 Dream Team, you can be sure they'd be going and I'm sure you wouldn't mock them. Don't allow people to be disrespectful to you - this is an opportunity to educate them so they can act like men, not bratty little boys.
Thank you for the tissue idea!
I am confused about the pre-show. Is it for every theater or just NYC?
Called local theater trying to confirm the preshow, no one knew about it lol. There will be "walk in material" but uncertain if skating related. Well, plannin' to arrive early anyways!Things that make me go hmmmm...

2/17) - As a point of clarification, RISE premieres tonight at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT/8 p.m. PT. However, there is a 30-minute pre-show and a 30-minute post-show, so if you want to see the entire presentation, please plan to arrive at the theater at least a half-hour early and stay until an hour and 45 minutes after the start time printed on your ticket. That was very clear and concise.
The event will be broadcast to select movie theaters nationwide at 7:30 p.m. local time (Pre-show features will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.)I guess they're showing the same thing as tonight in its entirety. So tonight's the live session, March 7th is all pre-recorded but you won't see anything different tonight than you would next month. I don't understand the time comment though - tonight's 8pm ticket time begins at 7:30pm with a pre-show. Does that mean next month's 7:30pm pre-show starts at 7pm? (Eastern times)
I thought it was sad that there was no mention of Bradley Lord. They did leave a lot of people out, right? I felt like it was just Broadmoor and Boston skaters that were highlighted. I wish they had trimmed the Owen ladies' stories a little bit to make time for the other skaters. It would have been nice to explain the shortage of coaches that resulted and how that void was filled from outside the US.

I thouroughly enjoyed every minute that dealt with the 1961 skaters and coaches. Ron Lundington and Frank Carroll must have even juicier tid bits to share.
Favorites:
"It must've been hard to have a Mom who says, 'Clean your room, and straighten your free leg.'"
The cigarette commerical--yes, let's smoke and skate, omg!
The authentic wistfulness of friends, and fellow skaters and of course the pain of the surviving families.
Not so hot (imho):
why were so many people left out of the narrative? I agree that the Owen clan is compelling, inherently dramatic material, but what I wanted a fuller picture
historic context--this sad event didn't just affect future champions and coaches--it fundamentally changed rink culture, skating customs, and clubs; it wasn't just a tragedy but a complete game-changer
Nope, sorry, the coffee table chat felt like an infomercial--the whole "discussion" felt forced, self-conscious and staged--for $15.00 I 'd rather see more archival footage (that felt rare and special) and watch the other stuff on a promotional DVD
just my two cents
I wonder how long a lesson was back then.
A collective, convulsive gasp cross the entire theatre when Vera Wang appeared. Many admissions among the young girls in the lobby afterward about tears over the footage of the charred skates in the wreckage.

...it mostly shows hunting programs...
it has a lot of other programming now, like the Tour de France, Davis Cup (tennis) and America's Cup (sailing). And NHL hockey.
A friend told me that RISE is finally coming out on Blu-ray and DVD very soon. Anyone know where we can get it? She also mentioned that there was another DVD on the 1961 U.S. Championships that is sold with it. We're so excited! Anyone know anything else?Welcome to skatingforums!
