GREENSBORO — Start practicing your camel spins, axel jumps and Salchows . Outdoor ice skating may be coming to downtown this fall and winter.

A High Point  events producer wants to establish an annual Piedmont Winterfest  in Greensboro’s  center city that would feature a temporary, 50  -by-100-foot  outdoor rink.

The event would run from Nov. 17  to Jan. 21 , the day before the start of the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships  at the Greensboro Coliseum.

“We are exploring the idea in tandem with the holiday season and ... it provides a community awareness with the championships coming,” said Ed Wolverton , president of Downtown Greensboro.  “The few people we have talked to have been excited about the idea.”

We skated on this sized-rink in Raleigh last year - it's smaller than Rock Center!  It was nice to be outside and skating, even if it's only for a short time.

(A side note further down in the article says that the Greensboro Coliseum is laying two sheets of ice for the US Nationals.)
