How heavy are Akton/Skatingsafe pads?
« on: May 12, 2012, 06:34:50 AM »
How much heavier are they compared to Waxel pads? I'm thinking of replacing my old Waxel pads (two pads got torn) with another set of Waxel pads. I already bought an Akton sheet for competition purposes (not delivered yet), but I'm worried about the weight difference. I handcarry all my stuff (public transpo, sigh) and I don't want to add any more unnecessary weight to my 5-lb skates.

Btw, I'm going to carry hip pads and a tailbone pad.

My guesstimate is 1.5-2 pounds, depending on the final shape.

Thanks jjane45! It is a lot heavier -- my 3 Waxel pads weight 8 oz max.

Original skating safe kneepads--made of akton polymer--4 1/2 oz.

Let me just say as a point of scientific interest, human beings are unable to estimate the weight of anything by simply picking it up. We can estimate something is heavier than something else, but the weight differnce has to be a lot. Probably more than a pound or more.

Ditto for estimating color. Humans can say 'this is carmine' or 'this is scarlet' (carmine has a yellow undertone, and scarlet a blue undertone) but we can't say "This scarf will match the dress I have at home." (Unless you've got some freaky color vision equivalent to perfect pitch)

Just weighed my 1/4" aktons. Hip pad 6 oz each, knee pad 7 oz each, widened tailbone pad 6 oz. I think I went with large sizes when cutting them. So yeah, it's not as heavy as I thought, but I always felt the paddings are very heavy in the skate bag  :-)

Thanx for posting the skatingsafe weights! Their knee and hip pads are 3/16" thick, compare to DIY akton's 1/4", so it makes sense that mine  weighed a 1/3 more.

We can estimate something is heavier than something else, but the weight difference has to be a lot. Probably more than a pound or more... Can't say "This scarf will match the dress I have at home."

While I suck at estimating weight (lol), guess I could tell an envelope containing 1 sheet of paper is lighter than an envelope containing 5 sheets of paper, but not necessarily between a 20 lbs. box and 21 lbs. box... The difference to total weight ratio also matters.

With color matching, it comes down to how close is close =)
