Songs You'd Like to See Someone Skate To ...
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:54:09 PM »
On my way home, I heard a song on the radio and thought of AgnesNitt's music suggestion thread.  Since she's no longer taking suggestions, I thought it would be fun to brainstorm about songs that you'd like to see someone skate to someday.

The song that launched this thread was "The Hippy Hippy Shake."  Put a little girl skater in a hippie outfit with lots of fringe and love beads on a flower power minidress and let her do swizzles and two-foot spins.  She'll charm the audience and the judges.

"If you still look good after skating practice, you didn't work hard enough."

This may have already been skated to, but I'd love to see someone skate to the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams".  It's been popping up lately on the radio at the various public skates, and every time I hear it, it makes me want to get moving and do something fun with it.  (And, yes, I was a teenager when this song first came out.)  I can so hear where various elements belong in it - spins during the "ooo ahhh" vocals, footwork during the "hold your head up, moving on" section.  With the strong beat, I can imagine a synchro team having a fun routine set to this music.

I have looked on youTube to see if I could find a skating routine to this, but did not find anything, but maybe I didn't use the right search criteria - I suspect that many titles to skating videos on youTube don't list the music title.  If anybody has a link to video of a routine with this music, I'd get a BIG kick out of it.

Here is a synchro team using Sweet Dreams:

And an ice dance team (music change around 2:55, not the version you posted)

I'd like to see the first Hunger Games music skate of the season!  I know I'll be hearing it for the next 5 years, so I just want to see the FIRST!

Choppy cutting begins!

You'll have to go to iTunes for this one.

"The Rink" from the 74 broadway musical "The Rink"

It may be the only song in history to yell out "Shoot the duck!"
Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

Kenny Rogers "The Gambler"!  During the morning adult sessions, the rink plays older and more laid back tunes... one day this came on and dang, at the time it seemed like it would be perfect.  Then I sang very quietly while I skated.... (anyone else sing when they skate?)

"The First Time I Loved Forever" from the TV show Beauty and the Beast. (Or any of the music from that show.) I know I saw someone skate to it back in the 1990s, and I saw someone do a performance to it on one of those "Dance with the Stars" kind of shows. But I can't find any of them on YouTube.

I think a little kid pairs team skating to "We're going to be friends" by The White Stripes would be really cute.

Being a rather obsessed Gary Numan fan, almost anything of his would do( though preferably something less well-known than "Cars"...)  "I Die You Die" in particular has the kind of rhythms that fit the feel of skating for me personally:  <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/74JBun0cmOc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

On my Boyzone kick, I'd love to see a pair or dance team skate to the adorable "Love Me For a Reason":

And I would also like to see a program to "No Matter What"...it would be interesting if this was a particularly "unconvential" pair (say a show program with two men, or two women, etc) :

Boyzone = awesome. What's a One Direction? Nowhere near as good.  :P
"Three months in figure skating is nothing. Three months is like 5 minutes in a day. 5 minutes in 24 hours - that's how long you've been working on this. And that's not long at all. You are 1000% better than you were 5 minutes ago." -- My coach

* The theme from the Liszt B minor piano concerto - obsessed with this both for the sheer emotive power, and because it's Armand's entrance in my favourite one act ballet, Marguerite & Armand
* Chopin's Revolutionary Etude. Beautifully flowing and dramatic but so quick. I can't see anyone carrying it off except for Asada
* Sibelius' Finlandia - sooo hard to cut from 10+ mins though, and several themes run through!
* Stravinksy, Capriccio for piano and orchestra; the music for Balanchine's "Rubies" ballet. I can see a very sassy, fun free dance to this.

Another "on the radio" song: Van Halen's "Jump"

This is a great video, showing an adult skater's waltz jump progress over time.
