Watch some high level ski races on TV.

They have really, really deep edges, and they try to stay just on the edge of losing all control.

Most of the guys have had serious knee injuries.

I wonder whether modern "extreme sports" are any more dangerous than traditional sports.

The columnist who put this together is an idiot.  He has no clue what caused the falls, but seems to take great glee in poking fun at whomever he thinks is at fault.

A lot of the videos can't be accessed anymore.  :( Oh, #7: One time, I was in a very empty public skate and one pair of pairs skaters (how on earth do you write this?) came in to practice a throw jump. The girl kept falling. On a particularly bad fall, she landed in a split position.  :o Good thing she was very flexible...

On a particularly bad fall, she landed in a split position.  :o Good thing she was very flexible...

I'd be crippled for life. But I'm not flexible.

I watched a young gal practice a split fall. She added a fabulous extra element. The skate guard rushed over and asked if she was hurt. She gave him a radiant, flirtatious smile, reached up her arms, and allowed him to lift her back to her feet, flawlessly and effortlessly reversing the motion.

It was so, so graceful. And so, so deliberate.  :)

For a high flexibility young lady the landing area is a large surface area, and it's all soft - hence potentially quite gentle. Especially if she starts out in less than a split position, and slides out gradually into the split.

P.S. I'm not suggesting that any of you who haven't practiced falls start out with split falls, even if you have the necessary flexibility. Start out with slow relaxed falls from a sitting position, maybe on a soft surface, with as much clothing-over-skin coverage. Work your way up. It's fun.
