There is a new book for middle grade readers called Twelve Kinds of Ice.
It a memory book of growing up in Maine and the twelve kinds of ice for skaters that happens throughout winter. It was very foreign to my skater because all ice here is man made all year long.
It has made us curious about living where you can skate in a field, make a rink over your garden, and skate the path of a frozen stream.

grew up on a farm here. one day as a kid they sent us home from school due to freezing rain. we spent the rest of the day skating up and down our half mile long lane ;D and we had a pond in the woods and the meandering ditch....lots of wet feet when you fell through :P
