The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD is looking for a Skating Director!

Rats! The job was only open for five days and the application deadline closed on 10/10/2010.

Take a look to see the qualifications and expectations; it might reopen if they didn't get many applications.

Alas, if a federal job is only open 5 days (I believe that's the legal minimum it has to be advertised) then that means they already had someone in mind and were looking to minimize the number of applications. Sorry.

Fort Dupont Ice Arena (http://www.fdia.org), in Washington DC, is looking for a new Skating Director, to run Kids on Ice (or maybe just the figure skating portion of it? they also do hockey and speed skating), a mostly volunteer-taught and charity-supported USFSA Basic Skills program. I believe Skating Director is a paid position. It is possible that the program is unique in being volunteer-taught and charity-supported. The rink is in an economically disadvantaged area, and exists in part but is used by much of the DC community, because it is the only indoor rink in DC itself. Most of the low level instructors are not certified coaches, but some of the upper level coaches are.  Any volunteer program involves a lot of work, and available staff changes somewhat from week to week. To some extant, the position has involved training the instructors too, of which I've been one.

Today (10:50 AM -1:20[?] PM, with a public session in the middle, is the last teaching session of this season, if you want to see. It is atypical in that we are testing kids.

I am not a point of contact. Check the web page above.

This position is still open -- http://twitter.com/#!/KidsOnIce

Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan has a posting for "Varsity Figure Skating Coach."

http://www.applitrack.com/WISD/onlineapp/jobpostings/view.asp?district=1192&category=Athletics%2FActivities

The job description and duties are very strange...
-"Add, subtract, and multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals"
- Nowhere does it mention figure skating except in the title, roflol!  I guess they didn't know what to write.

This is my favorite part:

"While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand.  Occasionally the employee will sit and or run.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the trunk while performing the duties of this job.  The employee will frequently squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, reach forward and repeat the same hand motion many times while performing the duties of the job. "

Yep, that's figure skating: bend, twist, squat, reach, kneel, sit, run...
The pay's much lower than the other job postings for coaches.  I wonder why?

My friend and I are both 29 year old women looking to take figure skating classes in Pittsburgh. It seems the only classes that we can find through online searches in Pittsburgh are for kids, except we did find a listing for an ages 2-adult class way out in Canonsburg.

Does anyone have any inside information of who to contact, where to look, etc.? Or maybe for a similar type of adult skating class/group skills thing?

This is an intriguing post from Craigslist: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/ret/2610076975.html

Figure or Ice Hockey Skaters - P/T Retail Sales (Union Square)

New York's best specialty sporting goods store is seeking several unique individuals to be part of our Skating sales team. We are seeking individuals who love to get out on the ice and play hockey or do figure skating. You will be extra competitive for one of these positions if you have previous retail sales experience and/or knowledge of how to operate a skate sharpening machine. We are not seeking skate boarders at this time. You should be up to date on the latest equipment - brands, fit characteristics, etc. and have a good sense of what you would offer a novice as opposed to an expert player. You should be comfortable in working closely with your customer to get the proper fit for the equipment they purchase.

You must be fit, well groomed, well spoken and able to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

This is a permanent part time position, 25 to 30 hours per week. The weekend days will be an important part of your schedule, along with a 4 to 6 hour shift on one of more week days. We offer a full range of benefits, including a generous associate discount.

Mod note: See link for more info.

Sounds like Paragon Sports to me - Union Square, specialty sports retailer.  Could be a good job for an NYU student.

Thank you!  There's really no one central place for help wanted ads in the industry, so I thought this would help someone who had relocated or was just starting out.  The more descriptive ads outline the requirements and responsibilities.

I had hoped that someone would say "I like this" or "I got () job" so I'd know whether to keep the thread going.  Thanks again.

No I think that's $1000 for the whole time.

Someone should remind USFSA that internships are supposed to be for the interns benefit and involve mentoring and training. USFSA is treating it like it's slave labor.

The listing says "$1000 month." It's a one-year gig with holidays, etc.

People are looking at different listings.

  http://www.usfsa.org/content/USFS_HP%20Event%20Admin%20Intern%20Summer%202012.pdf

is not for a whole year. It says it is for the summer, specifically Late May/Early June – Late August/Early September, 25-35 hours per week.  And it says "Stipend of $1,000 at conclusion of internship", which implies $1000 for the whole summer.

But that is for an Event Administrator, not the Communications Intern position.

"Internship" implies low or no pay. You do it mostly for experience, or college credit. Agnes, you may be thinking of what engineering graduates can get, not people who answer phones and such.

Klingbeil has unpaid internships:

I am completely disgusted that Klingbeil is asking for unpaid work disguised as an "intern".

It is very sad; I don't know whether the economy is *that bad* to merit the abundance of unpaid internships.  Non-profit groups used to do this, which was understandable, but not manufacturing or retail organizations.

Unfortunately, it's very common these days.   With more and more colleges requiring internships for degree programs, finding a paid position is difficult.

If Klingbeil actually teaches you how to make skate boots ["You will be working right from the showroom/factory and be involved with all aspects of making to selling."], as well as how to fit and modify skate boots, that might be a fair deal for someone who wanted to do that on a professional level. Essentially that would be labor in exchange for very specialized training, available virtually no where at the same level, by one of the leading custom skate boot manufacturers. Think of it as a work-study program in which work fully subsidizes tuition cost.

Alas, living in or near NYC would be pretty expensive for most of us.

Also, for some reason the "responsibilities" don't explicitly include making or fitting boots. Not sure how to interpret that.

There's nothing to interpret: the Klingbeil listing clearly says "office assistant," and the job responsibilities list clerical tasks.  They're not looking for a fitter or boot maker.

I am completely disgusted that Klingbeil is asking for unpaid work disguised as an "intern".

I have friends working in the fashion/retail industry in NYC and this kind of internship is pretty common.  My co-worker's son is trying to break into design and has worked a series of unpaid internships with major fashion houses just for the opportunity to make contacts within the industry and to have high-end names to put on his resume.  A couple times he's complained that he was nothing more than a stockboy, moving boxes in the back room.  Internships aren't particularly glamourous jobs and no one expects them to be.  But it's one way to get a foot in the door.  And there's no telling what you can learn by keeping your eyes open and doing what you're told.

With Klingbeil selling street shoes now as well as skates, it's not surprising that they're going that route, especially since they're located in NYC's fashion district now.

ETA:  Klingbeil's most recent post on Facebook says that they're looking for a PAID intern/employee now.

Unpaid internships are illegal in Canada with some exception so I am distressed at the trend free resume building that I see in the USA.  The exceptions are if they are done while the person is currently a student, an outline of what they will learn, and feedback is provided to the college or university and the job can't be one that the business would otherwise hire for.  Bell Canada (our big telco) was in hot water over this recently, having a entire department being nothing but interns who thought that interning would lead to a job but really they only got to interact with other interns. The really good universities find paid intern positions for their students btw, doing a degree on a co-op basis with paid work semesters means less student loan burden although it takes five years, not four to graduate.  Also, most co-op students land a job based on their work terms, or if they didn't get a good fit, can try a different place next work term.

Skate Canada advertised for an unpaid intern this spring.  They were looking for a university student, in new media, and it was a bit dodgy as to whether the job was truly a learning intern because the brief read more like "fix our systems please", however since it was limited to current enrolled students it was legal.

Nice to see that Klingbeil is now going to pay someone.

Since Klingbeil is in NYC, the Canadian laws don't really apply.

I grew up and went to college in NYC.  My college used to have an internship recruiting team that found paid internships for their students.  They had an in-house application and interview process to match up interns and companies.  A lot of Manhattan companies would create multiple summer internship positions to find their next full-time recruits after graduation.

Back in the day, unpaid internships were accepted by career-changers and people who had no experience or training whatsoever.   More often than not, the same ad would appear in the Wall Street Journal or NY Times week after week because people would apply for paid jobs first.  (To be honest, I never looked at the fashion trade ads; I was interested in corporations and conglomerates.)  I remember seeing many, many unpaid internships at charities like the Legal Aid Society, Fresh Air Fund, YMCA/YMHA/JCC and other non-profits.

My first internship was for a pharmaceutical firm.  They hired 6 of us to work the summer in their IT department.  Most of the interns did COBOL programming, but two of us (incl. myself) were selected to work in the Information Center.  To me, that job had the better description: we would be using high-level programming tools and interacting with other departments.  I loved it, as did my friend Rich, but we learned early on to NOT ask V (mgr) for work.  V would give us magazine articles to photocopy and collate.  B (asst mgr) would map out a real project that required programming, reporting and analysis.  He was patient and explained things well; a much-better experience.  The company kept us on for almost two years, with Rich and I splitting the hours during the school year.  We were able to network with other companies' IC's to find out what they did differently/better/worse.  We also received independent-study credits toward our degree by writing a white paper together on effective Info Centers.  (Today, they'd call this "best practices.)

There's nothing to interpret: the Klingbeil listing clearly says "office assistant," and the job responsibilities list clerical tasks.  They're not looking for a fitter or boot maker.

The law says an internship has to be training, and has to be  for the intern's benefit.

Maybe someone could drop the dime on Klingbeil, what they're doing is slave labor.

If you can't tell, I have a very very low opinion of internships.
Title: Re: Skating-Related Opportunities
Post by: Query on January 14, 2014, 10:35:04 AM
No one would work for Klingbeil as an unpaid office assistant - there would be no benefit. So I assume they get some training. Anyway, we are all just speculating - you would have to talk to Klingbeil to find out what it was all about.

Another example of an unpaid internship, by another name, closer to home to some of you: Quite a few skating rinks start out their instructors (who they often train in the art of teaching) as unpaid volunteers who assist the paid instructors.

(One of my rinks keeps them that way, and uses them as primary instructors [like me]. Programs that use paid instructors can be more selective about who teaches, so they usually do a better job - but many of the kids in this rink's program wouldn't have the opportunity if they had to pay.)

Another example of an unpaid internship that I think I already mentioned, but I will explain more fully to show how useful an unpaid internship can be to the student: Most U.S. congress people, as well as the president are strongly dependent on unpaid political interns. They do a lot of the grunt work, like reading proposed new laws; sometimes they help write the new laws, and they do a lot of the research. You talk to the lobbyists, and you often tell the congressmen and women what political positions they should hold. In that sense, it is one of the most influential positions in American (U.S.) politics. You make contacts with very influential people, and you learn the ins and outs of how the U.S. political system works. It is supposed to be very useful for future political careers, and to activists who wish to effect future political events. (BTW, Monica Lewinski was an unpaid White House political intern, but I hope she wasn't typical.)

Another example of an unpaid internship, that has become almost universal in the U.S.: Most U.S., high school (grades 10-12, ages about 16-19) students are required by law to provide "community service". They can choose where they do their service (e.g., the examples I gave above), but they don't have a choice about doing it. Other unpaid internships don't trouble me, because the student has that choice. But school-required community service really is slave labor, and I feel very strongly that it is wrong to have such a requirement.

Anyway, isn't this whole sub-thread a bit off topic? I assume the thread was intended to help skaters find paid jobs, not to discuss whether or not a specific unpaid internship is ethical.

I know this is an old thread, but I came across a listing for jobs that include some ice-related opportunities, through "Rink Management Services", possibly the biggest company to run ice rinks in the U.S.A.

  http://rinkmanagement.hrmdirect.com/employment/job-openings.php

that might interest some of you.

They don't have very high nominal minimum qualifications (e.g., to be a LTS instructor, they require USFSA freestyle 1 or "equivalent" test level; more typical requirements are one or two senior level gold tests), but it is also possible that they get so many applicants that you actually need higher qualifications.
