Tracking Skating and Progress
« on: September 03, 2014, 08:36:40 PM »
Wondering if people track their skating in terms of time on ice and also progress?

Any great tools or apps out there?  I've been writing down notes from lessons, but that's about it.  Should probably track hours for sharpening too....

I have an excel spreadsheet that I use to keep track of time on the ice, time since last sharpening, brief notes about what I did at each session, etc.

I got the app skaterbase! You can log sharpenings, time and cost on ice, and make notes about each session. Then it tracks it all for you and has some charts.

There's also a program designer but I've not tried it. I like the app functionality but wish the app was prettier!

Yay, something new to learn! :-\

@littlerain, a couple of questions if you know.

1)  How do you enter skates?  I am getting new ones, so will have 2.
2)  Do you know the what "Ice Time" is?  It's not duration and the numbers are things like 14:15, 14:25.... ??

Any other perls of tidbits you think would be helpful?  Thanks!

Skating progress seems painstakingly slow.  Then, a burst.  Then, slow.  Over the years is how I look at it.   Forward is a pace.

If you go to log grind, tap on skates, then you can edit/add skates

Ice time is the actual time - like 14;25 is 2:25 in the afternoon. So let's say I put in a session that goes from 2-3, and I skate from 2:15 to 3 then I can highlight/tap the times between 14:15 and 15 that I skated. then it adds up the duration for you. Or you can highlight all the times or just enter a value. I like this function bc you have the session duration as well as how much time you actually spent on ice in the session. Then when you view the charts, it will show you the time you paid for and the time you were actually on ice

Hope that helps, let me know if there are any other questions. It was a bit hard to figure out at first lol!

Thanks @littlerain!  They've been pretty receptive on Facebook too.  Their website had some outdated instructions so they have updated it now.

Do you track the skills you work on in a given session?  Looks like skills are not pre-populated.  Do you add them as an "activity" so you can plug them in?  I was putting them in notes/comments, but those are disappearing on me.

I use activity for things like private lessons. My notes/comments seem to work fine, and that's where I put in the skills

You can back it up I think, or export at least.

I think making skills an activity might be good because you don't have to type it out every time?  I'll play with this and report back.

I have 8 grinds listed and cannot figure out how to delete them!  I've asked on Facebook several times.  Their instructions are still outdated.  Do you know?

When you go to history you can just swipe to the left (similar to in other iOS apps) and then hit delete

Something is strange.  I was able to successfully swipe and delete last night and this morning I can't again!
