Poll: Lesson:Practice Ratio
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:05:12 PM »
I am impatiently waiting for my students' schedules to free up from school (tons of projects) and synchro (3 hrs/week), so I was curious:  how much do people REALLY practice?

The poll's anonymous, so don't worry about "outing" yourself.
Be honest about the ratio of lessons to practices, please.
If you take a 20 min. lesson and you practice for 40 minutes, the ratio is 1:2

Averages are fine if your schedule varies throughout the year/season.
If you're a seasonal skater, average it over the course of the season, don't include the non-skating part of the year.

Hmmm...so far 1:3 and 1:4 are in the lead.  That's usually what I suggest to skaters and parents.

I voted more >2 hours practice per 30 minute class (usually about 2.5-3 hours). But then, I'm probably older than most of your skaters' parents, so perhaps my input isn't a good sampling. I need that extra time to have the instructions sink in.

If I exclude the warm up part of lessons (half of group lesson time is supervised warm up) then the ratio would double. Still need to practice WAY more than that though, sigh.

I don't get why I know some kids who are meant to be on the competitive track (heading towards novice) that have parents who pay for 90min long lessons. As far as I can tell, that's surpervised practice. Although if the mom wants to pay the the coaches will happily take the money.

Well, I have my 15min lesson once a week, and I do two (or three) sessions a week. I think its about 0.25 : 4.5, so 1 : 18 but I ticked the 1: 14 box because on the saturday session I am a legendary slacker, so it should only count for half :P

I had a 1:8 or 1:10 ratio when I skated.  Now I barely get any practice in for myself.

I used to try to get 1: 1/2, the practice sessions are early on a Tuesday evening so I would try to get there every other week. After doing double lessons to catch up last term I didn't feel the need to try & rush away from work and pay extra $ to practice.

I might restart it this term but with the rink shutting down for 2 months I haven't decided on even if I'm going to trail across the other side of the city to even take lessons - defiantly no practice while that's going on...

I'm at about 1:6 right now, but need to bump that up by another hour of practice.

This ratio will also necessarily change as the skater advances. The higher the level, the more practice needed.

The higher the level, the more practice needed.

And 30 minutes of private lesson will be really different from 30 minutes of group lesson.

On the days I take a 1/2 hr lesson, I practice 1/2 hr before and after my lesson. I take a lesson twice a week.  There are also 2 days per week where I do a 45 min. practice session.  Sometimes I get a group lesson on Saturdays for a 1/2 hr and sometimes not.  Sometimes I get some practice in before or after so I didn't really count that.

When I am not in school (summer and breaks) and seriously skating, I skate between 8-12 hours a week with two 30min lessons. This summer I skated 6 days a week, 2 hours a day and had two 30 min lessons per week. I sometimes throw in a third lesson right before a test or competition. On lesson days, I skate for between 30-90 mins before my lesson, depending on the timing of it.

Wow, either people have a LOT more money for lessons than I do or they practice a lot less!  Well, I guess in part that's the diff. between a competitive track skater and those of us ... not-so-competitive, lol.

I have one 30 min lesson a week and do about another 4 hrs. of practice per week (if all goes well).

My dd is 10, skates Juvenile level, and does 1:3--  school hours and limited ice sort of impede doing much more-- she also does off ice, ballet and stretching in addition
