Title: My dd learned a lesson about holding back this weekend m
Post by: jumpingbeansmom on March 14, 2011, 09:01:45 AM
my dd (10) has a tendency to skate really conservatively in competitions (probably trying not to fall) and this often results in under-rotated (and downgraded) double jumps.   We all know she does them with speed, power, height and complete rotation at home.

So this weekend, she competed intermediate short and juvenile...the first day was short.   She (as usual) skated conservatively and under-rotated her double lutz, and fell on her double flip anyway, but still managed to pull off 6th out of 15 girls in placing.   Her coach took her ordinals and showed her how if not for the under-rotation, she'd have been on the medal stand even skating up a level.

Then next day, she took the lesson to juvenile, and WENT for it-- she didn't under-rotate anything, she did miss one double lutz anyway, and tripped and fell on her level 3 foot work (losing like 3 points just on the footwork because of it) BUT...she got +1 on a few things too, and by going for it still managed the gold medal in the event because what she did well was able to overcome the mistakes..she didn't give up, she didn't skate like she was defeated even after mistakes and there she was taking the gold.

What a fantastic lesson!

Congratulations to your daughter on the Gold and most importantly, on "going for it!"

Thanks, she is going to have to keep stepping it up...juvenile is pretty competitive these days.   She has several double double combinations that she is working to get consistent so she can get them into the program and she is trying to move her spins up to all level 4.    The good news is she is only 10, so she can skate juvenile next year too if her coaches want her to do so.

It is a lot nicer looking when she doesn't TRIP in the middle of it, lol.   Here is a video of her doing it in practice- though she was faster at it in the competition at this point.

And that isn't her music playing in the background.

She is quite tall...and the quick growth isn't helping her jumping, but she is managing anyway.   She is about 5 ft 1 inches tall right now.
