Camps and Clinics 2011
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:08:57 PM »
AgnesWitt's mentioning summer camps reminded me that I should start a topic for this year.

Feel free to add on any upcoming workshops, clinics or camps you come across!

Edited to add:
If they're adult camps, definitely post the information/links.  Elite training camps, clinics or those camps to any age are also welcome.
I think the smaller, in-house camps are fine to include, but only if the summer camp announcement is linked; just posting a link to the rink's website isn't useful.

Just as a side note, January is US Figure Skating's National Skating Month.

Check your rink calendars to see what special activities are taking place at your local rinks.

Our rink has synchro and solo demonstrations on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day followed by free group lessons and a public skating session.

The Mariposa application form looks intimidating! However, the home page does mention mention "Adult competitive." Perhaps our Canadian friends could tell us more.

There's a note in the brochure that the adult camp is $403 but it's not listed on the application form as a specific item, it would just be seminar.  They put out a separate adult brochure last year.   It is available, June 20-24.

It's a great adult week.  They've always had adults attend the seminar week but they were placed in the various groups with the kids.  Last year they made a specific adult group and put it into the groups rotation, there's usually 4-5 kids groups. Everyone rotates between, stroking/spins, jumps, interpretive skating plus off ice warm up and fitness and a lecture session.  I think the adults get food catered for lunch, I meant to ask someone about that.  And their own change room possibly.   I was only there for two days last year observing.

A competitive adult at Mariposa is someone who is competing in the Adult Nationals.  They also have ex competitive skaters who are too young for adult and who compete in Triathlon, or gold/open freeskate since our adult doesn't start until age 25.     I know a lot of adults who go to Barrie to take lessons specifically from the coaches there on an intermittent basis.    Their ticket ice is determined by levels so elite/non-elite sessions.

One of our "skating moms who also skate" took her son to Mariposa last year and said the adult lessons that she watched were fantastic.  Her DS (he really is a darling) is landing doubles and she's working on waltz jumps.

She really wants to join the son on the ice this eyar (different groups, of course) but she has to watch her budget.  I hope she can pull it off - she and her husband make a lot of sacrifices for the son's skating.

Welcome to Lake Placid Adult Figure Skating!

You will be starting the week off on Sunday with a reception at 7pm (location TBD). Coaches will be introduced and copies of all schedules will be available. Skaters may register at the 3-5pm registration or they can wait until the reception.

Throughout the week, you can skate on any adult session that you choose. You may also choose to participate in on-ice and off-ice group classes or special seminars. Private instruction is also available and we suggest that you contact the coach of your choice prior to your arrival.

Back again this year by popular demand is the Wednesday night party! Put away your skating attire and get dressed up for a night of fun! It will be a night to remember featuring games, drinks and prizes.

The week will conclude with an Adult Exhibition followed by a reception in the Hall of Fame Room on Saturday.

If you're still deciding whether or not to come, let some other adults tell you about their experiences...

Really, really expensive.
I have a friend who was just talking about how he has a fantasy about Dorothy Hamill, but it wasn't about skating with her, lol.  Nothing bad - he would just like to meet her, so I told him to sign up the for camp and enjoy the food & company.

Does anyone know anything about the Grassroots week long camp, this year held near Boston? We would like to go but the airfare right now is way too much! Any pros or cons? Is it worth it?
Thanks!

Aspen Adult Skate Camp and Ice House Adult Skate Camp appear to be missing in action. At least I can't find any reference to them.

I know the Aspen camp had gone from 2 sessions e years ago to 1 session last year, so it may not have been worthwhile for them to continue. I was thinking of going this year. They had really, really, spectacular ice. I mean the ice was like bridal satin.

I would be shocked if the Ice House Adult Skate Camp was not happening this year. However, been to the website, nothing there.

Maybe someone on the boards has contacts at either of these places and can fill us in.

I believe the Ice House Adult Camp was cancelled last year due to one of the rinks being out of commission.  They rarely put the word out until March or April, so be patient and we'll find out soon enough.

Aspen is also not on the 'net.  I did a bit of snooping last week and didn't find anything about their adult camp.

How is this adult camp? I attended Dorothy Hamill's Fantasy Camp at that same time last year, and am starting to think about summer plans. Sun Valley is definitely closer for me than Nantucket.

The National Ice Centre is delighted to announce this one day development clinic on 20 March 2011 for adult skaters!

The clinic will combine on ice and off ice sessions which will provide skaters with a well rounded, technical knowledge base which is key to becoming a skilled skater.

Applications for the clinic will be accepted from skaters aged 16 and over who have already passed Skate UK level seven and have not yet passed NISA Field Moves level four, while spaces last.

Each skater will receive three hours on ice and one hour off ice tuition, and the clinic will include flexibility and jump rotation, technical skills and exercises for figure and dance, in a structured yet fun environment!

The NIC prides itself on our ability to pro-vide a challenging and supportive atmosphere for ice skating development and we are pleased to be able to extend this to our senior recreational skaters!

Price: £40. Registration is at 1.45pm, with the clinic taking place 2.30 – 8pm.
