How long/far is your commute to the rink?
« on: June 02, 2013, 05:21:57 PM »
I found a place with ice throughout the summer, but it's south of the big city (my husband would have a conniption if I told him I wanted to drive there), over 70 miles, estimated drive time of an hour and twenty minutes (but everybody is driving that direction most f the time, so probably th drive would be longer.)

Realistically speaking, I could only make the trip about once a month, if that often....

So I got curious, how long do you drive on average (although I believe I am too German in my distance calculation...in one hour you traverse half the country, while here in the US...you are just reaching the suburbs...)
 ~ I should be writing~

August-March, I skate at a rink 15 minutes from my house and 10-15 mins from work. Location-wise, it's awesome.

But April-early August, it doesn't have ice. So I skate mainly at a rink that's almost exactly an hour from my house and work. 70 miles. Occasionally I go to other rinks that are more like 1 hour 20 minutes away. I try to get to the rink twice a week. It makes it hard to have much of a social life.

Ermmmm... Don't hate me! I can see my rink from the end of my road! It takes me between 5 and 10 minutes depending on whether I stick to the tarmac or cut across the grass! :P It takes me 45 mins-1 hour to get to work from there though. :-\

Last summer when my rink shut for repairs we managed to get limited ice time at 2 rinks. One was 65 miles (1.5hrs) each way and the other, much smaller rink, was 50 mins (~35miles) each way.

November to mid-March, about 10 minutes; mid-March to the end of October, closest ice may be 30 minutes, one or two days a week; if there are hockey camps the ice will be closed, next closest ice is 80 miles, one day a week; other rinks are 150 miles away.

I used to do the long drive once or twice a week in the off season but I am too !@#%^ old now! I may do it every other week this summer.

2 rinks, both within 15 miles to my house.  And, the beach is less then 3 miles away too.

45 minutes to one rink.
1 hour to the other 5.

There's a dead rink 10 minutes from my house, all the other rinks are packed (even freestyle) but no one will reopen that dead rink.

Yes I'm in with the 90's. I have a skating blog. http://icedoesntcare.blogspot.com/

Four minutes (driving across the street) to my main rink when there's ice time I can afford (soon I will be making more, super excited to start lessons by end of summer) and then 40 minutes and a toll to my backup rink that has evening public sessions.

Too long / too far - generally 30-45 minutes for home rink.

Secondary rink is only 15 minutes away but I stopped going there because of scheduling.

I'd say it's 15-20 minutes to each of the 3 rinks I skate at regularly. My general rule is that I won't skate anywhere where I'd have to leave the house more than 45 minutes before the session starts (so accounting for traffic and time to get skates on), otherwise it's too much time wasted in transit for an hour or so on the ice.

There are at least 2 rinks even closer to my house, but they have either inconvenient times or lesser ice quality, and for an extra 10 minutes in the car it's not necessarily worth it. I'm in awe that some of you commute so far to get to the rink!

35 minutes, door to ice, to my regular rink.  (Drive time = 20 mins)  Another 15 to my second-choice rink because of traffic.

3 minute drive.  In rush hour if I don't take back roads it can be 10 but I am usually not going to skate at that time.  If I get every green light and all the planets align I swear I can get there in 1 minute.

20 minutes each way usually. There's a sister rink (both are park dept) only 2 miles from me, but I go to the other one because 1. the closer one doesn't have times I can go, except on the day I have to go to the farther one anyway to work; and 2. I work at the farther one so I can skate for free there.

There is another rink about 25 minutes away. There are a few others anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour away. There is no lack of all-year ice here, which was unfortunately not the case when I was a kid (otherwise I'd have advanced a lot faster).

I don't think I could drive more than 45 minutes each way to an ice rink on a regular basis. My biggest concern whenever I think of moving from this crappy area, is that none of the places I'd want to move has a close-by rink with tons of available ice time to fit my crazy schedule. My first choice for living location is about 100 miles from the nearest indoor rink, so unless I hit the lottery to be able to open my own, I would either have to settle for a pair of dry-land Pic Skates (TM), or quit skating completely.

I skate in 3 rinks.
30 min to two, 15 min to one. Half the time I drive to the 15 min one, half the time to the 30 min one.  Luckily, the skating times do not change too much with the summer.

30 minutes each way to my home rink.  10 minutes each way to my backup (which would be my home rink if they hadn't taken out one of the rinks for roller derby!!!!)

I'm lucky to have several options available, even though they're not as convenient as I would like.

Closest rink is 10 miles/about 15 minutes away.  Best rink is closer to 30 minutes away.  It's a double surface with awesome ice quality.  I'm going there Wednesday for my first private lesson since February and lung issues.

30 minutes by bus - thank you bus company for operating a single bus from near-ish my house to near-ish the rink :)

It's probably 45 minutes when you include the walking at each end :)

15 minutes one way and I skate several days a week. Work gets in the way of skating more.

35 minutes to the winter rink.  The summer one is about an hour door to door, but, from my camp it is 25 minutes. Or, often I go kayaking in the morning and take a detour for skating in the afternoon on the way to the camp. I have not figured out that distance.

I consider myself extremely lucky ... I live about 7 minutes from my local rink. I guess that means I should be practicing more often...  88)

About 7 minutes. I can even ride my bike if I'm not lazy/am more organized.
