Title: Bruised hip bone - recovery time
Post by: CTCat on October 26, 2017, 10:48:31 AM
My daughter had a hard fall and went down directly on her right hip.  She finished the freestyle, but the next day was in pain and could not put weight on her inured side.  Long story short -- ER, x-rays, no fracture but a badly bruised hip bone (a/k/a "hip pointer").  Almost a week in and she cannot put weight on it and is on crutches.  We cannot get an appointment with an orthopedist until November 10, and I am wondering what we can expect in terms of recovery time.

It's really hard to say.  She may need another x-ray.  Non-displaced fractures don't always show up right away.  Or she could need an MRI.  Could be some other injury you can't see on x-ray.  After a week with a bruised bone she should probably be able to put at least some weight on it.  How old is she?

I had a bruised hip before. I suggest don't rush it. I skated again once it felt better (around 1 week later) -- unfortunately, it felt worse right after. I was off the ice for a month before it healed completely.

I second asking for another x-ray or an MRI but I'm guessing the specialist will do that on their own as a part of seeing her.  In the meantime, just keep her off it and let it heal.  I injured my hip a few years ago and it's been meh since because I didn't take the time to let it heal.
